‘Law & Order: SVU’: Why Benson’s ‘Behavior and Attitude’ in One Episode Left Fans Shocked

It’s hard to get anything past a Law & Order: SVU fan. One sharp fan took to Reddit on Wednesday to explain why the actions of Olivia Benson in an episode tilted them the wrong way.

By this point, just about everyone knows Mariska Hargitay for her leading role on Law & Order: SVU as Olivia Benson. She has been starring in the breakthrough role since 1999 and has won numerous awards for her performances. Some of those include a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

Let’s make no mistake about it — Hargitay’s Olivia Benson is one of the most loved characters in all of television and she has been for some time. But evidently, there is one episode where her actions and attitude left fans a little shook.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Season 19 Episode 24

In Season 19 Episode 24 titled, “Remember Me Too,” Benson and the rest of the Special Victims Unit squad investigate the chain of events that ultimately led to a hostage situation. However, Benson and the other detectives begin to doubt the kidnapping and hostage victim’s testimony. And in the wake of all that, a dangerous criminal network is discovered.

One user on Reddit, u/Pastel_Blue1, made a post calling this a “terrible episode.” And they laid out plenty of reasons as to why they believe that.

“I am at a loss for words from this episode, I am very shocked to see Oliva’s behavior and attitude in this episode and how she constantly tells Stone to drop the charges against Lourdes because SHE believes that Miguel raped her LIKE GIRL????? YOUR WORD ISN’T ENOUGH FOR A CONVICTION,” the original post states. “Even Barba would say the same thing god do I miss him. I don’t get how Olivia can just ignore the fact that she killed someone intentionally or not he’s still dead and she should still pay for that.”

Several fans felt compelled enough to chime in with their thoughts. Many of them agree that not only was it a bad episode, it also has racist undertones.

“This episode is highly racist/colorist and just overall bizarre,” the top comment reads. “It made me so uncomfortable that they cast darker-skinned actors to play the cartel when the actress who played Lourdes the victim is so light-skinned and classically European looking. Perpetuating colorism at its finest.”

One fellow Redditor even went as far as to call it the worst episode ever of Law & Order: SVU.

“It’s honestly the absolute worst SVU episode (or episodes, rather, since the first part was equally terrible), in my opinion,” they commented. “NONE of Olivia’s actions make any logical sense. And yes, it turns out that Lourdes *was* indeed raped by Miguel, but the squad did literally nothing to make that case aside from Olivia just taking Lourdes’ word for it. THIS. IS. NOT. HOW. POLICE. INVESTIGATIONS. WORK.”
