If there was ever any doubt that Michael Landon ran things on the set of Little House on the Prairie, fellow actor Dean Butler put those doubts to rest.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the cast of Little House on the Prairie got together for an online reunion. The Little House crew teamed up with Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley, on Stars in the House. The duo runs the daily live-streamed series to support The Actors Fund and its services.

Each of the various cast members from Little House on the Prairie called in to a video chat from their homes. During the socially distanced reunion, the crew talked about their time on the classic television show. And perhaps one of the best moments to come from the entire interview was when actor Dean Butler revealed how his plans for a musical number got flipped upside down.

Butler is without a doubt best known for his role on the NBC family drama as Almanzo Wilder. He appeared in the final four seasons of Little House on the Prairie, the spin-off show Little House: A New Beginning, and the three post-series movies.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Performed on Broadway

In addition to starring on Little House on the Prairie, Dean Butler was also heavily involved in Broadway. He performed in the original company of Into the Woods as Rapunzel’s Prince. Then he internationally starred as Tony in West Side Story, and regionally in Company.

As a result, Rudetsky and Wesley questioned Butler during the interview on why he never had a musical number. Butler replies that he actually did, in fact, have one. But he says that fellow star Michael Landon had other plans.

“Well I did get a song on ‘Little House’ and I wanted to sing it nicely but Michael forbid that,” Butler explains. “He said ‘No, you have to sing it hillbilly.'”

Butler said that he thought his singing career might be over after that song.

“It was a song called ‘My Only Love’ in an episode called ‘Divorce Walnut Grove Style,’ he says. “And it was a really awful singing. I said ‘I have no shot at ever singing in a way that is going to be pleasing after doing this.’ Because it was really not good.”

The other Little House on the Prairie cast members on the video call got a kick out of his story. Meanwhile, another perk that made the online event so great was that fans were able to take part as well. In addition to being able to join the live chat, they could also donate money to the cause.
