It need not be reiterated for fans of this timeless show, but ‘Little House on the Prairie’ is the definition of a television classic. As such, the show produced some of the most memorable lines in the history of family entertainment.

With such a strong literary backing as Laura Ingalls Wilder’s best-selling books of the same name, it’s no wonder the show would present dialogue authors would still be gathering decades upon decades later. Once the pilot episode hit in March of 1974, it became clear this strong foundation would go the distance. No one, however, could’ve predicted the millions of families across the world quoting the beloved Ingalls family through generations of television series and films.

In celebration of the iconic, ratings-topping drama, Outsider.com has gathered our absolute favorite quotes from where it all began: Season 1. Fans will, no doubt, know some of these by heart.

And what better way to start than with perhaps the show’s most famous line of all:

‘Little House on the Prairie’: The Best Season 1 Quotes

Home is the nicest word there is.”

Laura Ingalls, S1-Ep1

Once these timeless quotes begin to roll, however, it becomes clear just how many more contenders there are for this top spot. As you’ll notice, all our top picks – and indeed the fandom at large’s – for best Season 1 quotes belong to little Laura Ingalls herself. Surely this doesn’t surprise diehard fans, right? Laura is, after all, the very author, heart, and soul of ‘Little House on the Prairie’!

I knew there would be rivers to cross and hills to climb, and I was glad, for this is a fair land and I rejoiced that I would see it.”

Laura Ingalls, Pilot Episode

Learning to write was one of the hardest things I ever hoped to do.”

Laura Ingalls, S1-Ep2

Laura’s Season 1 – Episode 2 quote leads perfectly into her loving quote from Episode 14:

Dear Pa, I can’t write what’s in my heart because I can’t get the words to come out at the end of my pencil.”

Laura Ingalls, S1-Ep14

For our last Season 1 quote from Laura, though, we’ll throw it back to the very first episode one last time:

“That was the happiest homecoming ever. Here, Pa said, he’d harvested a crop he didn’t know he had planted. A harvest of friends!”

Laura Ingalls, S1-Ep1

Grizzly old Mr. Edwards, however, would disagree. By the time Season 2 rolled around, literal mountain man Isaiah Edwards would deliver another classic ‘Little House on the Prairie’ quote for the ages. It goes a long way in illustrating the rocky relationships Edwards held in his life. Especially with the Ingalls, with whom he’d appear with from the get-go in the pilot episode.

That’s the trouble with friends. They’re always trying to give you advice!”

Isaiah Edwards, S2-Ep7

Now if you’ll excuse this author, it’s time to re-watch ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Season 1 again. That, or revisit some of Charles Ingalls best lines in the series, as well. And our sincerest thanks to LittleHouseonthePrairie.com for identifying many of the show’s top quotes.
