Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert took to her Instagram account on Wednesday to post sweet pictures of her dog, Josephine, just days after her passing.
The adorable photos featured Melissa snuggling with Josephine or the french bulldog relaxing. The post’s caption reads, “I miss her. #josephine #frenchbulldog #frenchie #frenchiesoninstagram #mygirl #rainbowbridge”
Fans of Melissa took to the social media platform and shared their support for the actress during this hard time.
“I’m sorry for your loss. I lost my cat almost a month ago,” one fan comments. “I’m a dog person and when I had to put my last dog down it kill me. I said no more. Every dog I’ve own had died this cat I had 14 years and I don’t know what happen and no vet on the weekend. It hurt to watch him died and don’t know why he started that way. But anyway I’m truly sorry for your loss.”
Melissa Mourning the loss of Dog Hours Before Granddaughter’s Birth
Melissa’s french bulldog passed away hours before her granddaughter, Ripley, was born. The actress shared with fans, “My heart breaks to tell you that just two hours after the birth of our granddaughter Ripley, our sweet Josephine passed away,” Gilbert shared. “It was as peaceful as it was sudden. She simply stopped. We are sure she was making room and making it easier for us to travel and see our kids and grandkids.”
Melissa Gilbert also reveals in her post that the sweet dog had an amazing life and touched many people from her co-workers to children in hospitals and everyone in between. “Most importantly, she was loved… beloved even… and she knew it,” she writes. “Goodbye, my sweet Josie, Joser, Joseph, Jeebs. I love you. I’m so lucky I got to be your mama. I will remember you always always.”
Since Josephine’s passing, Melissa has been posting pictures of the cute pup, , including a pic of the dog playing in a pool with other dogs with the caption, “Meanwhile, in Heaven.” Gilbert shares that her friend, Jerry Gelb, made the photo. “Absolute perfection,” she writes.
Melissa Gilbert’s Acting Career and Thoughts About “Little House on the Prairie”
Melissa was just nine years old when she auditioned for Little House on the Prairie. The American Western historical drama show ran from September 1974 to March 1983. Gilbert played Laura Ingalls Wilder for Seasons 1-9 and also starred in three post-series films. She also played various roles on TV series and films, including When We Last Spoke, Secrets and Lies, Safe Harbour, Nip/Tuck, and 7th Heaven.
While speaking about Little House on the Prairie recently, Melissa stated what made the TV series great to her was the sense of family, camaraderie, community, and faith. She also explains, “Because no matter what time we’re existing in, no matter where technology is going or where the world is headed, we still need each other. We still need that human touch. We still rely on one another as people.”
Gilbert now lives in New York City with her third husband, actor Timothy Busfield of “Thirtysomething” fame.
