It may be difficult to believe but TV superstar Michael Landon wasn’t great at everything.

Yes, he was a Golden Globes nominee. Yes, he starred on one of the most iconic television shows of all time, Little House on the Prairie. And yes, he was an international heartthrob for decades. But even so, there were things that Michael Landon wasn’t great at. During an interview in 1978, Landon revealed that he was a pretty terrible student as a kid.

“I didn’t care about anything. See, I didn’t think I was going anywhere. We didn’t have enough money to send me to a university,” said Landon.

Michael Discovered a Hidden Talent While In High School

However, at the end of his sophomore year of high school, Landon discovered a hidden talent – and it wasn’t acting!

“In the 10th grade, near the very end of that year, I realized I found something that I could do well. I could throw the javelin,” said Landon. “Which may sound like nothing but everyone needs something that they feel they do well. I took an old beat-up javelin from the school that they let me have. And I threw it all summer long while I was working. And eventually, I ended up in a position where I knew I could go to college, where I could get a scholarship. When I graduated from college, I was only 125 pounds. And at 125 pounds, I had the furthest throw in the United States.”

Well, we know he cared about Little House on the Prairie. And we just learned that he cared about throwing a javelin. So, the key to Michael Landon’s success was caring about what he was doing. If there wasn’t any passion, he wasn’t going to be good at it. But, get him interested and he’s going to become a champion -whether it’s acting on a classic television show or throwing a javelin.

According to his co-star, Alison Arngrim who played Nellie on the show, Landon was a big reason the show was so successful. During an interview in 2018, Arngrim shared what it was like working with Landon on set.
