One of the all time comedic greats, Lucille Ball’s influence on on television and comedy can still be felt today.
On-screen, Ball was a Hollywood icon and her legacy as a comedian and actress still lives on to this very day. She starred in four different television series that bear her name, including her biggest hit “I Love Lucy.” She also stars in “The Lucy Show,” “Here’s Lucy” and several other television comedy specials.
Off-screen, Lucille Ball was also very funny, often making people laugh without even trying. In a 1977 interview with the legendary journalist Barbara Walters, she tells of a particular instance she calls a “Lucy moment.” Ball was 66-years-old at the time of the interview and three years removed from her “Here’s Lucy” series.
Lucille Ball Describes ‘Lucy Moment’ While Cooking
In this particular instance, Lucille Ball says her culinary skills weren’t always in top form. While making a chicken liver dish for dinner, the “Lucy moment” occurs and “ruins” the meal.
“I was making Chopped Chicken Liver, it takes a couple of hours to make a huge dish, we were expecting some guests,” she recalls. “And I was doing fine, I was right on time, and I tasted it and it needed salt. I already had it in the dish but it wasn’t too late because I hadn’t put the egg yoke on the top. So I took a big salt thing and I went like this and the top came off. And the entire thing looked like a snow bank. They’re practically driving in the driveway. I just didn’t know what to do so I quickly did the worst thing you could think of — I rinsed it.”
It isn’t known if the guests of Lucille Ball and husband Gary Morton enjoyed the rinse chicken dish served to them. The interview with Walters is full of humor and a rare look at Ball’s personal life.
Ball had an illustrious and long career, winning several awards and honors for her work on screen. She received 13 Primetime Emmy nominations, taking home four wins. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1984
Lucille Ball passed away in 1989 at the age of 77.
