If you’re a big fan of the “Mad Max” film franchise, you are going to be very jealous of some of your fellow fans. See, they got to live out their apocalyptic dreams thanks to a recent festival.
According to The Daily Mail, this unique event was the Wasteland Weekend. And, of course, if you’re having a “Mad Max” festival you have to hold it in the desert. So, that’s what the organizers did. They chose the Mojave Desert in California as the site of the “immersive” event. Edwards, California, has been the hub of the festival since it began in 2010. The event did not take place during 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Needless to say, “Mad Max” fans were thrilled to gather again with their fellow fans. The 2021 event took place from Wednesday, Sept. 22, through Sunday, Sept. 26.
The festival’s website gives a very clear description of its theme. “Well, it’s post-apocalyptic, but it’s more than just that. We’ve always been heavily influenced by the ‘Mad Max’ films and the Hollywood version of the post-apocalypse, and we wanted to create the illusion where we’re all in the SAME wasteland world. It’s an inclusive world that has a lot of diversity, but not so random that it just becomes a cosplay festival/costume party.”
Of course, many of the fans arrived in costume as their favorite characters from the film franchise. The event takes cosplaying pretty seriously. In fact, there were areas of the festival where those in costume only had to act like their character.
While “Mad Max” was the focus of the festival, other post-apocalyptic games and films were also celebrated. The immersive event put attendees in a world where civilization has fallen apart. As such, they discouraged fans from dressing up as characters that do not fit the post-apocalyptic theme. For example, don’t plan to go to Wasteland Weekend dressed as a Disney character or a character from “Star Wars.”
In addition to cosplaying, the festival also included live music and DJs, burlesque acts, fire dancers, and of course, a film festival.
