Wisconsin Restaurant Mallory’s Won’t Show NFL Games Due To Players’ Anthem Protests

If you’re looking to catch the NFL games this weekend, you’ll want to avoid Mallory’s Restaurant and Rooftop Bar. The Hudson, Wisc., restaurant announced on Facebook that it was calling for a boycott of the NFL after players and coaches kneeled during the national anthem.

“Mallory’s will NOT be showing NFL games until the players, coaches and ownership stand and respect the American Flag,” the now-deleted post read. The restaurant said it still stands behind the post, but took it down because of the “vulgar hatred” that was being left in the comments.

NFL players and coaches are kneeling to bring attention to social injustices in the United States. The practice began in 2016 when then 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem. Since then, the practice has become a flashpoint across the country.

The debate is playing out once again, this time on Mallory’s Facebook page.

Several people posted in support of the restaurant. Many said they would make a special trip to eat there and support this policy.

“Awesome, it’s your right and a lot of people are behind you 100%”

Greg Reynolds

Good stance. Stand for the anthem or leave the country. It has nothing to do with the color of your skin, it has to do with the pride of your Country. Don’t like it, leave.

Others felt the restaurant had missed the point of the protests and were feeding into racism.

Mallory’s says choice is American ideal

Players and coaches kneeling is one of the most contentious issues in the U.S. President Donald Trump has frequently tweeted his displeasure with the practice. Several people cite kneeling and raising a fist during the playing of the national anthem as a reason behind the NFL’s declining ratings.

In the deleted post, Mallory’s said having the option to watch the NFL or support a restaurant that doesn’t is up to the consumer. Furthermore, that choice is an American ideal they hold dear.

“Choosing to not financially support or watch the NFL until they stand & respect the flag is a choice. America,” the restaurant wrote.

“If you choose not to support the restaurant because of this decision that’s your choice and we respect it. America. There are plenty of other places to watch the NFL … and some people may just enjoy going to a place with no NFL on TV. America.”
