Happy birthday, Whitney Houston!
The music icon would have been 58 on August 9. And in honor of the day, countless musicians are sharing their praise for the legend. Mariah Carey is one of those celebrities. She shared a photo of herself and Whitney Houston collaborating on a song together in 1998.
Along with the video, Carey wrote, “Happy birthday Whitney. Missing and celebrating you today.”
The song the two are singing in the video is “When You Believe.” The song was the theme for the 1998 animated film, “The Prince of Egypt.” The song is about knowing that there can be miracles if you just believe that they are possible. During the song, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston sing, “There can be miracles when you believe. Though hope is frail, it’s hard to kill. Who knows what miracles you can achieve? When you believe, somehow you will. You will when you believe.” The song won an Oscar for best original song.
People Still Love Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’
Who hasn’t danced (drunkenly or not) to Whitney Houston’s 1987 hit song, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” with a group of friends on the weekend? Well, if you haven’t, you’re, missing out. Because this song is iconic.
And we’re not the only ones who think so. Houston released the song as the lead single from her second album Whitney. She had already produced several number one hit songs so the song was guaranteed airplay. However, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” far exceeded anyone’s expectations. The single sold 3 million copies in America while the album moved 9 million.
Additionally, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. And it landed Whitney Houston an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single. Since then, countless celebrities have covered the song. Rebel Wilson even features a hilarious karaoke version of the song in her 2019 movie, “Isn’t It Romantic.” But no versions compare to the original by Whitney Houston.
What’s The Story Behind ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’
Although the song was a pop sensation and it’s a fan-favorite dance tune, the lyrics are somewhat somber. This isn’t a song about simply wanting to dance with just anyone you can find. This is a song about wanting to dance with the person, your person. Songwriters George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam penned the song. during an interview, the duo shared how the song came to be.
“Many of our friends were in this boat – 5 o’clock comes around, they start getting restless and it’s, ‘What am I gonna do?’ And ‘I can’t stand to be alone again tonight.’ And ‘I really don’t wanna just go party, I’d really like to find somebody. Try and find somebody to love,'” said Rubicam. “So it’s more of that long-term partnership that people want.”
Well, fans certainly found long-term love with the song. It’s been an anthem for all of us hopeless romantics ever since.
