Marty McFly’s Hoverboard from ‘Back to the Future II’ Sells for Jaw-Dropping Price

“GREAT SCOTT!” Marty McFly’s 2015 hoverboard from Back to the Future II sold for a jaw-dropping price at an auction earlier this month.

According to New Atlas, the Back to the Future II hoverboard was auctioned for the price of $501,200. The media outlet noted that the price represents a 400 percent increase in the film prop’s value in just three years.

For those who haven’t seen the film, Back to the Future II follows Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox). After visiting the year 2015, the character must repeat his visit to 1955 in order to prevent disastrous changes to his original time of 1985. McFly has to fix everything in the timelines without interfering with his first trip to 1955.

While in 2015, Marty has to pose as his own son and lookalike, Marty Jr., in order to refuse an offer to participate in a robbery with Biff’s grandson Griff. This act saves Marty Jr. from prison. But Marty and Griff get into a fight and the now famous hoverboard chase happens.

The film’s director Robert Zemeckis stated in Back to the Future II’s behind the scenes featurette the hoverboards were actually real but were not released to the public due to safety issues. The “real hoverboard” footage was also shown in the trilogy’s DVD release features. It was later revealed that the hoverboards were not real.

Those who starred alongside Fox in the 1989 Back to the Future sequel were Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson, Elizabeth Shue, and James Tolkan.

Michael J. Fox Reflects on ‘Back to the Future’ Franchise Success

During a 2019 interview with the New York Times, Michael J. Fox opened up about his success in Back to the Future films. “I was kind of an idiot. I missed the point that I had talent. That I had gotten where I was because I did something well.”

The Back to the Future star then admitted that he was comfortable with the idea that he had won the “lottery,” and that made him less respectful of what taken he had. “I’d be riding in a limo with my head out of the sunroof and a bar in each hand. [I thought], ‘Who expected this success from me?’”

Fox then said that his Parkinson’s diagnosis got his head in the game. “I realized there are bigger things than being a rock star.”

Fox also talks about his co-star, Christopher Lloyd, and his role in the Back to the Future franchise. “Christopher Lloyd did amazing with Doc. The specific thing that he did amazingly is taking what every actor hates, which is the exposition, the laying pipe, and turning it into high-art Kabuki theater.”

The actor admitted that Back to the Future fans loved the relationship between Marty and Doc so much because Marty would suck the information out of Doc’s craziness. “He’d have that second of like, ‘Ok, got it!’”
