Mary Tyler Moore Documentary Titled ‘Being Mary’ In the Works

A documentary focusing on the life and career of actress Mary Tyler Moore, which will be titled “Being Mary,” is currently in the works.

Her name is synonymous with comedy, starring in “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and her own “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” In her personal life, Mary Tyler Moore dealt with substance abuse issues as well as diabetes.

According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, “Being Mary” will be directed by James Adolphus and produced by Debra Martin Chase. Lena Waithe of Hillman Grad Productions and Endeavor Content is also behind the project. Her estate is also on board with her husband, Dr. S. Robert Levine, acting as an executive producer.

Mary Tyler Moore Made Big Impression on ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’

Mary Tyler Moore played Laura Petrie on the popular “The Dick Van Dyke Show” between 1961-66. She was a stay-at-home mom, yet the interactions between her and her husband Rob [Van Dyke] remain worthy of watching.

After the show ended with five seasons under its belt, Mary Tyler Moore eventually got her own sitcom on CBS. “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” ran from 1970-77 and showed off Moore’s comedic talents as a single woman in the TV news industry.

Moore died in 2017 at 80 years old.

Waithe said, “With the help of her loving husband, Robert, and her friends and colleagues we hope to reveal that America’s sweetheart was more human than they ever imagined and was often put on a pedestal she never felt comfortable standing on.”

“In her high school yearbook, Mary wrote: ‘The world is always ready to receive talent with open arms’… and Mary always sought to surround herself with the best,” Levine said. “To have extraordinary and purposeful talents like Lena and James tell Mary’s story honors her in a way I know she would have treasured.”

At this time, the Mary Tyler Moore documentary is being targeted for a 2022 release.

‘Being Mary’ Documentary Will Talk About Tragic Loss Of Her Son at 24 Years Old

The documentary will cover issues in her life, including the tragic death of her son Richard “Richie” Meeker in 1980. Meeker, who died at 24 years old, was cleaning a shotgun when it accidentally fired and killed him.

And, while she loved her son very much, the star still had her share of regrets following her son’s death. Moore talked about these during an interview with Charlie Rose in 1995.

Rose referred to Meeker’s death in 1980 as “the hardest thing for you to come to grips with …” The actress definitely agreed with that point of view. And, she elaborated on her feelings.

“Yes, of course,” Mary Tyler Moore said. “I can’t imagine a pain more all-encompassing than losing a child. He was 24.”
