Matthew McConaughey is renowned for his laidback, easygoing attitude. It may surprise you then to learn he’s actually quite the disciplinarian with his children.

Speaking to TODAY recently, McConaughey’s wife, Camilla Alves, opened up about her husband’s parenting style. Despite what you might think, he’s firm when it comes to his kids. “He is chill and laid back, but he’s also, he has a very disciplined mentality, right?” she said. “Like, that’s how he’s been able to do the work he’s done and accomplish what he does.”

Apparently, McConaughey applies the same firm stance with his children he uses for his own life and success. Nonetheless, Camilla says they’re just like any other family for the most part. “It’s just like raising kids with, you know, as any family would do. It’s got its challenges and its blessings, but I would say it’s fun.”

This seems to coincide with a 2020 TODAY interview McConaughey did last year, saying he raises his children differently from his own parents with him. “I don’t raise my children the same way my parents raised me … but I don’t dare judge how my parents did it because every single time I got in trouble or got the belt or whatever, I earned it,” he said.

On the same note, McConaughey says communication is paramount in their family. “I choose in our family to have much more dialogue than my parents choose or their parents choose. My wife and I do a little more explaining. ‘OK, let’s debate this out.’ … And even today, my mom goes, ‘Geez, y’all talk about it too much.”

Matthew McConaughey Posts Throwback to ‘Dazed and Confused’ Days

Matthew McConaughey’s acting career is both storied and iconic. Remembering one of his earliest roles, he recently posted a throwback photo to Dazed and Confused with a signature caption of “L-I-V-I-N.”

Wooderson was McConaughey’s character in Dazed and Confused, a man drifting through life who was “living” like he was still in high school. It’s also where the actor coined his famed catchphrase “alright, alright, alright.”

Interestingly, in a Set it Straight: Myths and Legends podcast, he stated he got his first acting job after getting kicked out of a bar. “In the right bar, at the right time, meet the right guy, we hang out, having quite a few pops – enough to get kicked out of said bar. In a cab ride back to my house, he’s rolling up a doob, he’s dropping me off, he says, ‘Hey man, you ever done any acting?'”

You often hear about how actors got their big break and this seems like the most McConaughey way for it to happen.
