Everyone needs a hype man like movie star Matthew McConaughey.
The “Dallas Buyers Club” and “Mud” actor made an appearance at the Austin FC home opener game. The stadium was wearing all green in honor of the home debut of Austin’s soccer team at the Q2 Stadium in North Austin.
The team was up against San Jose and ended the night with a draw, 0-0.
Matthew McConaughey at Austin FC Game
There were 20,000 fans gathered in the stadium Saturday night to watch it all go down. Amongst the all-green Austin fans was McConaughey. He stood in the center of the field wearing a green suit. Instead of everyone else who had on sports attire, McConaughey still managed to look as professional as ever.
He enthusiastically beat down on his Djembe, although many news outlets were instead calling it a bongo. The camera pans to the rest of the stadium as they chant and cheer for the Austin team with Matthew McConaughey as their leader.
The audience is screaming “Verde” (which means green in Spanish) as well as “Listos” (which means ready in Spanish).
One commenter summed up the experience perfectly with an iconic McConaughey GIF.
In addition to being a movie star and even a professor at the University of Texas, McConaughey is also a minority owner of the Austin FC franchise since August 2019. He may have a stake in the popular club, but he’s also just a massive fan, to begin with.
The actor spoke to KXAN in April 2021 about how he believes that this franchise, Austin’s first professional one, is a “100-year war.” However, McConaughey is all about investing his time and future into things he truly believes in.
“I’m investing my time, money and self into things now that are legacy choices. Things that I want to build in the long run, that I want to have alive when I’m on my death bed…that I want to hand off to my children that they can hand off to their children, stuff that will outlive me, that’s what I’m trying to put my time into now,” McConaughey said.
McConaughey on Balancing Acting and other Career Goals
Although McConaughey has many interests and business goals outside of acting, he is a firm believer that he can do it all simultaneously.
However, he once took a complete break from Hollywood in order to focus on his family life and other responsibilities.
Matthew McConaughey was known during the 2000s as a romantic comedy goldmine. He starred in movies like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Failure to Launch,” and “The Wedding Planner.” After he had his first child, he said that the work just wasn’t what he wanted.
So he took a break. It’s what he calls his “unbranding phase.” According to CNBC, the actor spoke about this phase in his life at a recent 2021 CogX conference. After his two-year break, he began to get calls that were more drama-focused. This includes “Dallas Buyers Club,” which earned him an Oscar for Best Actor back in 2014.
“Trust me, I had the last six months before I got that phone call to come back to work in dramas — I did not know if I was ever going to work in Hollywood again,” McConaughey said.
