Matthew McConaughey Details Terrifying Near-Death Experience With Highly Venomous Snake

Believe it or not, there was once a time in Matthew McConaughey’s life when things were, in fact, not alright, alright, alright.

The veteran actor once revealed that he had a close call with a venomous snake in Australia that almost left him dead. In 2019, the actor-turned-professor opened up about the terrifying experience he had with the snake when he used to live in the Land Down Under.

During an interview with Today Show Australia, he recalled almost getting bitten by a brown snake, which may sound relatively harmless, but are amoung the country’s most venomous snakes.

“When I was here, I almost stepped on one and I should have been bitten,” he began. “Yeah, I was going back in the back shed down in a friend’s house in Waterville and stepped on something. It was a bit dark and just as I opened it, I saw it went right through my legs and it gave me a bit of a scare. And then my friend came over and they caught it and they said, ‘That’s a brown snake, mate. That could have really sucked.’”

Despite almost being bitten by the deadly reptile, the Texas native said that it’s still his favorite Australian animal: “That’s my favorite animal because it didn’t bite me.”

Texans on a Matthew McConaughey Governorship

The Oscar winner made headlines when he said he would “be a fool” not to consider a gubernatorial run in his home state of Texas. A few weeks ago, a poll revealed that half of all Texans would consider a McConaughey governorship.

In a poll by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, “The Dallas Buyers Club” star garnered more support for governor than Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a third term in 2022. According to the poll, McConaughey receives 45 percent support in a hypothetical contest, with Abbott getting 33 percent and 22 percent of Texans saying they would vote for another candidate.

Currently, it seems as if McConaughey is flirting with the idea of running in 2022. He and his family live in the state capital of Austin, which puts him at the epicenter of all things political in the Lone Star state. Moreover, McConaughey works as a professor for the University of Texas. Since 2019, he’s been a professor of practice at the Moody College of Communication au UT Austin.

Although the race is a year away, McConaughey is still seriously considering transitioning from actor to politician. “I’m looking into now again, What is my leadership role?” McConaughey said last month during an episode of the Balanced Voice podcast. “Because I do think I have some things to teach and share. What is my role, what is my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into now?”
