Everyone’s favorite “alright, alright, alright” actor Matthew McConaughey has made it known he’s toying with the idea of running for Texas governor. The former romantic comedy star traded his heartthrob roles for more serious work and continues to add even more to his resume. Though he hasn’t said officially, the University of Texas at Austin professor may be ready to step into politics.
In a recent interview, McConaughey said he’s more of a centrist than anything else. And that makes him a potential third-party candidate if he were to run.
“I would call myself aggressively centrist. Not because that’s the place of gray and compromise… I think today it’s a daring space. It’s the space of outlaws,” he says, via Yahoo! News.
And many Texans agree that McConaughey would do well in the governor’s seat. A recent poll confirmed this as McConaughey performed better than current governor Greg Abbott.
The “Mud” actor has ideas about how he would transition into the role as well – not aligning with either the left or the right.
“Each party is claiming to be democracy itself, and in doing so can’t much tell you what they’re about,” says McConaughey. You got to go ‘left’ sometimes, you got to go ‘right.’ There are people on the so-called right and the so-called left that are better people for the job at hand at different times.”
Matthew McConaughey’s ‘McConaissance’
Further, the Oscar winner says he wants to be a useful tool when it comes to politics and that he’s always had an interest in state affairs.
“It’s something I’m giving great consideration…there’s some wonderful sacrifices for the awesome position,” he says.
Calling his transitions over the years a ‘McConaissance,” the “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” actor says he’s still learning and figuring out when the timing will be right for him to make his next move. However, the star is eager to jump into a new chapter. And it could be sooner rather than later.
Matthew McConaughey Encourages Fans to ‘Dream Big’
Though Matthew McConaughey has an established acting career, he’s also a Major League Soccer owner and has his own line of whiskey. The actor is also a professor and often encourages his students and fans to take the steering wheel of their own lives.
In a post on Instagram, the star reaffirmed this to fans with a message about dreaming big in the world.
“Dream Big Dreams is how we make a better tomorrow for ourselves, for our family, for the world. It’s not a reality just because you dream it,” McConaughey says. “But you gotta have that dream out there that seems to be fiction when you think of it. But, a day at a time if you stay on the path to get there all of a sudden it turns out to be truth. A reality you’ve created an impression out of your own reality and you’ve achieved it.”
He went on to add that when you look back at your life, you’ll want to know you’ve accomplished what you set out to do.
“At the end of our life, we look back and we say hey, how many of those did I achieve? How many of those dreams, big dreams that I dreamed did I actually get to and make a reality? That’s as good as it gets.”
