While we know Matthew McConaughey to be the master behind many roles, we’ve never seen him as a kids’ movie star until he became the voice behind Buster Moon, the anthropomorphic koala and protagonist in Sing and Sing 2. In the adorable and upbeat film, McConaughey portrays the optimistic and passionate hero of the story who loves theater perhaps a little too much.

Of course, this is a huge shift for Matthew McConaughey who typically plays the suave love interest or a straight-up hell-raiser. And while he fulfills these roles naturally, these aren’t typically the best movies to see with the kids.

Now that he’s become Buster Moon, though, McConaughey has found that his most recent and most innocent role has opened up so many more doors for him in the industry. More than that, it’s given him the chance to spread a bit of “joy” to people across the country through their screens.

“It’s some good news – some unequivocal good news in a time when we could use some,” McConaughey said of his recent family-friendly role in an interview on TODAY.

Originally, Sing came out in 2016, long before we could ever predict the ramifications of a global pandemic. Now that the sequel is out, though, McConaughey felt that this was just the cheery flick families – including his own – needed to keep their spirits bright.

“Finally, I’m making some films that my kids can see. I got a little more street credit at the dinner table,” the Oscar-winning actor shared with a pleased grin.

Of Course, Matthew McConaughey Had to Bring His Kids to the Premiere

As Matthew McConaughey explained in his interview on the TODAY show, he wasn’t the only member of his family whose voice was in the movie. Vida, McConaughey’s 10-year-old daughter with wife Camila Alves, also lent her pipes for Sing 2. According to her dad, the tween played the role of one of Rosita the pig’s daughters. Although Vida only had one line during the film, it was an extremely special moment for both father and daughter.

“She has a scene where she’s scuba diving through chocolate and gets to say, ‘This is the best day of my life, daddy,’ and she meant it,” the proud father explained.

In order to celebrate Matthew and Vida McConaughey’s hard work, the family of five posed for a photo at the premiere of the movie, all equally excited to see their names in lights. All three kids look like the perfect combination of their parents. McConaughey’s son, in particular, looked like a brown-eyed mini version of his dad.
