Matthew McConaughey’s Powerful Reflection on ‘Greenlights’ One-Year Anniversary

It’s been a year since Texas native, movie star, and all-around good guy Matthew McConaughey published his #1 New York Times bestselling memoir, “Greenlights.” Based on the spurts of philosophical genius we’ve gotten from McConaughey over the years, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that his book has been well received. He took some time out recently to reflect on what writing the book meant for him and to thank everyone who shared in his journey by reading it.

True to his impossibly charming personality, Matthew McConaughey waxed poetic about who we are, where we’re going, and some of the ways to get there.

“One year ago today, I released my first book, ‘Greenlights’—the truest extension of me that I’ve ever shared. I hoped it was a story worth sharing, but I didn’t know. Over this past year, you’ve told me, ‘yeah, hey, it was a story worth sharing.’ You read it. You saw yourself in me,” the movie star said in a video he shared on Twitter.

According to McConaughey’s description on the book’s official website, “Greenlights” is “a love letter. To life. It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.”

Matthew McConaughey went on to detail all the positive feedback he received from readers in his Twitter video. They told him “Greenlights” was inspiring, funny, and helped them to address their personal struggles and shortcomings.

“You told me it helped you look your angels and your demons in the eye. Well, thank you. Because that’s exactly what writing this book did for me. Thank you for that reciprocity. It’s funny, isn’t it? How life works—the mystery looking forward and the science looking back,” he continued in the Twitter video.
