During a recent interview, actor Matthew McConaughey not only revealed that he’s a lifelong wrestling fan, but also admitted that he got kicked out of a wrestling event when he was younger.
McConaughey joined Maria Menounos on her “Better Together” podcast last week. The actor and Menounos both opened up about their love for wrestling. The McConaughey family even watches WWE together and his kids have become big fans. He says it’s been fun watching with his children who still don’t know if wrestling is staged or not.
“I love the suspension [of] disbelief because my kids and I watch. And they’re starting to get that, when they go, ‘Oh this is fake,’” he explained. “I’m going, ‘What are you talking about? No way!’ Because I won’t give them the wink yet.”
However, the real gem of the interview is when McConaughey recalls some early wrestling memories. Particularly one when he was much younger that involved him being chased by security guards and getting kicked out of an arena.
Matthew McConaughey Gets Kicked Out Not Once but Twice
The actor attended a wrestling event in Shreveport, LA as a kid. During the event, he threw rotten tomatoes at wrestlers and made the mistake of spitting on wrestling legend King Kong Bundy before being kicked out… twice.
“I got kicked out of Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport,” McConaughey revealed of his early wrestling memory. “I snuck back in through the bathroom window, and then I got kicked out a second time, the same night for spitting a loogie on King Kong Bundy. He looked me in the eye and got seriously pissed off and scared the heck out of me after I did it.”
“And I took off running and they caught me and kicked me out for the second time that night,” he continued. “I brought a paper bag full of old, mushed tomatoes and Skandor Akbar comes out and I’m just pelting him. And that was all great until they started really connecting. Then the security found me and they kicked me out.”
Additionally, the lifelong wrestling fan did not rule out entering the ring one day himself. Menounos posed the question to McConaughey since she herself has wrestled in four WWE matches. The actor was measured in his response.
“I’ll say not too much because, as you know, you can’t say too much about these things. But it is something that interests me,” McConaughey answered.
So there you have it. World-famous thespian Matthew McConaughey will enter a wrestling ring one day. Well, maybe. You can watch the wrestling segment of the interview around the 1:41 mark below.
