Yvette Nicole Brown had one goal when working with Matthew McConaughey on the movie Tropic Thunder in 2008. She wanted to get as close to him as possible to find out if he smelled bad. Turns out, he smells exactly like you would expect him to.
In 2005, Matthew McConaughey told People that he hadn’t worn deodorant in 20 years. Brown read this and took it as a challenge when she was cast opposite him in Tropic Thunder. She explained what happened on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, Fox News said.
“So my first thought was, I’m going to get as close as I can to him to see if he’s right. He does not have an odor. He smells like granola and good livin’. That’s all I can say,’” Brown said. “He has a sweet, sweet scent that’s just him and it’s not musty or crazy.”
The Community star guessed that Matthew McConaughey must be a meticulous bather.
“I believe he bathed because he smelled delicious,” Brown joked of the Longhorn loving McConaughey. “Those that don’t bathe, I don’t understand. I’ve got to get underwater and rub some soap on me every single day!”
But it’s not just his smell, he’s also very nice, as well. Brown said working with the possible Texas gubernatorial candidate was a lovely experience.
“And he was very kind to me,” she added. “Most of my scenes — all of my scenes — were with him. I’ve been a fan since A Time to Kill so the idea that I got to be in scenes with him and be directed by Ben Stiller. … It was a great experience.”
McConaughey, Other Celebs Explain Bathing Habits
For some reason in the past few months, the topic of how celebrities bathe has come up over and over again. It likely started with Ashton Kucher and his wife Mila Kunis admitted they rarely bathe fully.
“I don’t wash my body with soap every day,” Kunis said on Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert podcast. “I wash pits and tits and slits and holes and soles.”
Kutcher added: “I wash my armpits and my crotch daily, and nothing else ever. I got a bar of Lever 2000 that just delivers every time. Nothing else.”
They also admitted to bathing their two children only when they’re visibly dirty. The practice started with Kunis’ childhood in Ukraine, as she didn’t have hot water and didn’t take showers very often.
Their admission started an avalanche of responses from other celebrities who decided we needed to know about their bathing habits as well.
Jake Gyllenhaal also doesn’t believe in bathing every day, for instance.
“More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times,” Gyllenhaal continued. “I do believe, because Elvis Costello is wonderful, that good manners and bad breath get you nowhere. So I do that. But I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves.”
We agree on Elivs Costello and good manners, but that’s a hard pass on not bathing for me.
