The American actor is eager to return Down Under when the timing is right. He’s hoping the next project will take him there.

Matthew McConaughey loves Australia. In fact, he is hoping his next project takes him there. The 54-year old actor’s love for “Oz” comes from his time there as a teenager. McConaughey took a gap year in Australia and has loved it ever since. He talks to The Daily Telegraph about his hopes to return.

“I am always looking for what jobs will take me there,” McConaughey begins. “Will it be a vacation? Will it be work? We will see. Maybe it will be a parlay of both.”

The actor adds that his son Levi has a newfound passion for surfing. The 13-year old and his father love the outdoors, which would make time spent there even more worthwhile.

“My son has just gotten into surfing and can’t wait to get over there and has all of these breaks he wants to get to,” McConaughey adds. “‘Australians love the outdoors, you have to at least respect and understand it if you are going to live over there because everything bites in the sky, the sea or the land.”

Growing up in Texas, Matthew McConaughey is thankful for his early years in Australia. Living independently and working six jobs, he learned some important life lessons.

“I begun to realize how valuable and enduring that year in Australia was for me, how I wouldn’t be the man I am today, unless I had taken that year,” he says. “How I wouldn’t have learned the lessons if I would’ve come home early.”

Matthew McConaughey’s First Crush

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Matthew McConaughey reveals his first celebrity crush. Turns out, it was his Sing 2 costar Reese Witherspoon!

He began swooning over Witherspoon in 1991, when he was just 14 years old. Witherspoon was in Man In The Moon at the time. He shares his adoration for the actress as she sits right across from him!

“[Reese] was one of my early, early crushes and if you’ve seen the movie it’s inevitable not to have a crush on [her],” he says.

Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon have been friends for 15 years. They first met at the 2006 Academy Awards. McConaughey attended her wedding to Jim Toth, who is also the actor’s agent. This close bond makes promoting Sing 2 so much fun. McConaughey is happy to reunite with Witherspoon after all this time.

“This is the first time I’ve seen Reese in two years… or any rest of the cast,” he says. Sing 2 hits movie theaters on December 22nd.
