Matthew Mindler, Child Actor Known for ‘Our Idiot Brother,’ Cause of Death Revealed

Matthew Mindler, a child actor who played in “Our Idiot Brother,” died by suicide last week.

TMZ reported that the 19-year-old freshman college student went missing at Millersville University on Wednesday. The public university is in Pennsylvania between Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

The website reported that a preliminary report by Lancaster County Coroner’s Office ruled the death as a suicide. The full report is still pending.

USA Today reported that school officials found the teenager’s body in a wooded area near campus. 

University president Daniel Wubah said in a letter posted on Twitter that this was “a time of grief for the family, school and the community.” Wubah asked the campus community to come together to support each other and our students during this difficult time.

This past Saturday, the school announced Mindler’s death after officials discovered his body in Manor Township near the campus. 

Hunt for ‘Our Idiot Brother’ actor

Reportedly, people saw the Hellertown, Pa. resident walking out of his dorm on Tuesday. 

Mindler left his dorm on Tuesday at 8:11 p.m. He was wearing a school hoodie, jeans, white sneakers, and a black backpack.

Since his disappearance, Mindler did not return any calls from his family.

On Thursday, the school released the following in their address to the students:

“Yesterday afternoon, we notified the campus of a missing first-year student, Matthew Mindler. Matt’s health and safety are paramount, and I know our thoughts are with him, his family, and friends. Our police department is continuing efforts to locate Matt in conjunction with regional law enforcement agencies. They are following every lead and appreciate your attention to this effort.”

Mindler’s mother, Monica, worked with police to file a missing adult report on Thursday. The school said more than 40 search and rescue team members searched for Mindler. 

‘Our Idiot Brother’ Actor Had A Few Roles

Mindler appeared with actor Paul Rudd in the 2011 “Our Idiot Brother.” In the comedy, he starred along with Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel about a well-meaning guy who came off as naive and too optimistic about the world.

Ned, played by Rudd in the film, is released from prison because of good behavior. He goes to stay with one of his three sisters, and they pass him off between each other. Mindler played Ned’s nephew, River, in the film.

According to IMDb, Ned introduces Dylan’s son, River, to the 1963 film “The Pink Panther.” Steve Coogan, who played Dylan in the movie, has been compared to Peter Sellers, who played the primary role in “The Pink Panther.” 

Mindler was also in the soap opera “As The World Turns” and had a role in the 2013 short film “Frequency.” Recently, he worked in a sketch for “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” in 2015.
