Michael Caine wants to spend as much time with his grandchildren as he’s got left. In fact, the British actor even gave up drinking.
A couple of years ago, Caine has a bit of a health scare. His weight dropped, and he became afraid that he had cancer. As a result, Caine decided to cut back on one of his favorite hobbies – drinking. The actor reduced his alcohol intake to zero.
In an interview with Candis magazine, Caine said his grandchildren have given him “a new lease of life.” Caine is the grandfather of three grandchildren, Miles, Allegra, and Taylor.
“I’ve decided to live a bit longer, I’ve cut down on the drink and got a new outlook on life,” Caine told the outlet. “I thought I wasn’t going to have grandchildren, and suddenly I have three. They’re my fountain of youth and have given me a new lease of life without any of the worries or troubles. I’m completely besotted and so is my wife.”
Michael Caine Opens Up About Struggles
Michael Caine has had an accomplished career as an actor. After-all, he’s even garnered a knighthood from the Queen of England, an honor bestowed to a select few. But for all of his pomp and rewards, Caine says his family has been the greatest part of his life.
Caine has two daughters – Dominique and Natasha. And he considers both of his girls and his grandchildren to be his lasting legacy.
“I’ve had some high points in my life, I’ve won two Academy Awards and been given a knighthood, and I used to think that you couldn’t get better than that but then I got my grandchildren, which is better than anything,” Caine said.
Back in 2016, Caine opened up about his past struggles with alcohol in an interview with Radio Times. The actor said he used to drink about a bottle of vodka a day early his career. Caine credits his wife Shakira with ultimately helping him “calm down” a bit. The two married in 1973.
“Without her I would have been dead long ago. I would have probably drunk myself to death. I was a bit of a p–s artist when I was younger, I used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and I was smoking too, several packs a day,” Caine said.
He also opened up about using alcohol as a stress reliever. “I wasn’t unhappy but it was stress. You know, ‘Am I going to get another picture? How am I going to do this part? How am I going to remember all those lines? I’ve got to get up at 6 in the morning and I hope the alarm works.'”
