Michael J. Fox Opens Up About Winning Spoken Word Grammy: ‘It’s Silly That I Have One’

Over his career, Michael J. Fox has received several awards, including Golden Globes and Emmys. Fox says the silliest award he has ever won, though, is the Grammy Spoken Word.

In 2010, Fox won the award based upon a reading from his second memoir “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future: Twists and Turns and Lessons Learned.” The actor stopped by “The Late Late Show with James Corden” to discuss his newest memoir. He also showed audiences his Grammy award.

“I thought I would win the Nobel Peace Prize before I win a Grammy,” Fox said. “I had no business winning a Grammy. It’s just like silly that I have one. There are these great musicians that work their whole lives and don’t have one. I read some words I wrote and they gave me one. But I will take it.”

Michael J. Fox Discusses Parkinson’s Disease

In his newest book “No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality,” Fox discusses advanced symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Doctors diagnosed the “Back to the Future” actor in 1991. The illness causes various neurological effects. But Fox is worried about the toll it takes on his family.

“But Parkinson’s is harder for the people around me than it is on me,” Fox told The Guardian. “The wide variety of movement, from being frozen to careening down the street like a pinball, yeah, that’s hard. But in terms of my feelings about the progress of it, that’s just my situation.”

In another moment, Fox fell and broke his arm because he lost balance due to the illness.

“I believe in all the hopeful things I said before,” he said. “But that all seems silly when you’re lying on the floor, waiting for the ambulance because you broke your arm, and you feel like an idiot because you told everyone you’d be fine and you’re not.”

The actor admits he was in a dark place, especially when writing the book. But since then, he’s tried to find optimism in the world around him.

“It’s my cranky book. It’s about being cranky and not being happy with the way things are going,” Michael J. Fox said on the show. “I gave myself a break, and I started to see things I was grateful for. I realized in that gratefulness is where optimism lives. It can’t live without gratitude.”
