Actor Michael K. Williams’ untimely death last week left the world in shock. The man was a phenomenal actor, known for his starring role in “The Wire.” However, officials said Tuesday he was much more than an actor.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea opened up about the actor’s plans to collaborate on some projects with the NYPD prior to his death. He spoke with the actor earlier this year in hopes that the department and Williams could team up.

Though the commissioner didn’t specify what those projects were, he shared his grief at the loss of the Emmy-winner, saying it was all just “very sad.”

“And I say that from someone that spoke to and met Michael earlier this year,” the commissioner said. “Just such a tragic case … where, you know somebody in his prime of his life, really tremendous … great person.”

Williams died last Monday in his apartment. He was discovered after not showing up for an event he was supposed to appear at Saturday evening. A relative went to his luxury home to check on the man. However, once inside, the family member knew something was wrong immediately. Williams was lying facedown and unresponsive.

The family member placed a call to 911 right away. Shortly after 2 p.m. the same day, the actor was pronounced dead. It is suspected Williams died of a heroine overdose, reports Fox News.

Williams was open about his history of drug use and his ongoing struggles with the plight. What looked like drug paraphernalia was on the table in Williams’ dining room where they found him. The actor was 54-years-old. His cause of death is an ongoing investigation, authorities said.

Could Michael K. Williams’ Death Be Criminal?

As an official death is yet to be announced, reports Tuesday indicate the NYPD is looking into Williams’ case more closely. The department is considering whether the death could be ruled as criminal.

Law enforcement officials believe Williams died by a potent mix of heroin laced with fentanyl. The department is now looking into “the origin of the narcotics” and where Williams obtained them. This includes a search for a drug dealer to find out more details.

Further, Williams is undergoing an autopsy – which is standard – to determine his official cause of death.

Friends, family and other celebrities took to social media to remember the actor for who he was, despite his struggles with drug use.

In a statement released by Williams’ representatives, the family asked for respect during this time.

“It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy-nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams. They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss,” the statement read.
