‘Modern Family’ Star Julie Bowen Speaks Out About Rescuing Hiker Who Suffered Major Injury: ‘It Was So Gross’

In early August, “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen rescued a woman while hiking. After becoming the latest celebrity guest host on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” yesterday, she finally opened up about the incident.

The woman, Minnie John, was visiting Arches National Park with her family. During the hike, John began to feel light-headed and sat on a nearby rock. Not wanting her family to miss out on the experience, she insisted they go on without her.

“I would not forgive myself if we had to go back down without seeing this site after coming so far. I sat on the trail by the side as people climbed up and down and insisted on them going and seeing it and coming back to me. There are no trail guides here. There are only mostly young healthy trekkers with backpacks going up and down. I sat there holding my head in my hands and waited.”

However, the heat proved to be too much and before Minnie knew it, she had fainted and was surrounded by people, being told a doctor was helping her.

Julie Bowen Recounting the Experience and Being ‘Useless’

“It was so gross,” Julie Bowen joked as she recalled John’s injury.

“My sister is a doctor, her name is Annie, she’s an infectious disease specialist. Highly overqualified and more than capable of applying a little roadside hiker first aid. So she goes all Meredith Grey right away and starts applying pressure and doing doctor stuff. And I brought all my professional expertise to the table by yelling things that I’d heard on episodes of ‘E.R.”

Taking things a step further, Bowen goes so far as to say her children accompanying her did more than she did. Her 14-year-old, an avid knife enthusiast, excitedly provided the means to cut bandages. Additionally, Bowen’s twin 12-year-old boys found John’s family after racing further into the trail.

Funnily enough, even in her dazed state, John recognized Julie as an actress, but couldn’t remember who she was. Bowen responded in tow: “I was so embarrassed by how useless I had been that I said ‘yes, I am… I’m Elizabeth Banks!’ Let her take the heat.”

Bowen provided an update saying John is doing well. According to her Facebook post, she was dehydrated and also is diabetic. She allowed her sugar level to dropped dramatically, leading to her fainting.

After finishing the tale, Bowen read the audience a note Annie wrote. The star promised her sister she would on the air after the event concluded.

“Don’t get your medical advice from an actress. In all seriousness, if you have questions about COVID vaccinations please reach out to a real healthcare provider. It’s not too late to get vaccinated and it is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and your community.”
