Fox is bringing a new series about country music to life. The show, called Monarch, will star Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel. Sarandon is an Oscar-winning actress, and while she may not strike people as a country music kinda gal, that’s the magic of acting.
According to TV Line, Sarandon and Friel are both set to star in the upcoming show, which got a straight-to-series order from Fox. Anna Friel has also made some serious waves with her work on Pushing Daisies, Land of the Lost, The Girlfriend Experience, and Marcella.
The official logline of Monarch definitely has our attention. The show is described as a, “Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music, the Romans. The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman. Along with her beloved husband, Albie, Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette ‘Nicky’ Roman will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.”
Susan Sarandon Should Bring a Ton to ‘Monarch’
Sarandon will play Dottie while Friel plays Nicky. Sarandon is very well known for her work on films such as Thelma and Louise, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Blackbird. She’s also been on multiple TV series such as Ray Donovan, Search Party, 30 Rock, and many others.
Sarandon won an academy award for her work on the film, Dead Man Walking. She also has a BAFTA award and a SAG award, both of which are highly esteemed accolades in the film and television industry. She got her start in the acting world in a 1970 film called Joe. She’s also been in multiple Broadway productions.
Sarandon should bring a ton to this Monarch role. Having been in the business for a long while, she never fails to delight audiences. There’s still a ton of questions still to be answered about the series. Who is landing the male parts? Just how much music will be involved? When will it be released?
Michael Rauch is the showrunner for the upcoming series and will executive produce alongside writer Melissa London Hilfers. Director Jason Ensler is an executive producer for the season premiere. Michael Rauch has previously worked on shows such as Instinct, In the Weeds, Beautiful People, and Royal Pains.
Outsider will stand by and keep you updated on any upcoming news related to Monarch. But with Susan Sarandon and Anna Freil on board, it sounds like it’s off to a good start.
