Late acting icon and “Mrs. Doubtfire” star Robin Williams touched millions of people in his own way. His eccentric comedy and ability to flip the switch into Oscar-winning dramatic territory made him a legendary figure in entertainment. Apparently, Williams was able to reach people on a personal level, too. One of his co-stars from the 1990s knows his generosity well.
One of Robin Williams’ better-known roles came in the 1993 family comedy “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Fans remember his character fondly. He played a divorced actor who disguises himself as the perfect housekeeper to stay close with his children. Of course, he has to do it all without his ex-wife, played by Sally Field, finding out.
The actress who portrayed his daughter was a teenager when the movie was being filmed. As a child actor, Lisa Jakub had to abide by labor laws. So she did her schooling on set via a tutor. But her high school said she could no longer be enrolled there. They didn’t want to accommodate a long-distance education. In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Jakub talked about the situation.
“And I was really upset about that, and Robin, just being perceptive and kindhearted, reached out and was like, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ I told him what happened, and he wrote a letter to my school asking them to please reconsider,” she said. “Would they work with me in trying to balance my education and my career? And he didn’t think that that was fair.”
The ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Star’s Simple Act Had a Massive Impact on Lisa Jakub’s Life
The letter didn’t work, however. The school maintained its policy. Even though they eventually framed the letter from Williams. But in hindsight, the important part for Jakub was that he tried.
“And even if it didn’t work, somebody needed to stand up, and he did that for me,” she continued in the interview. “I don’t know if he ever knew how massive that was and how much I felt like he was in my corner. And how much that really shifted things for me and made me think about, “What is the impact I wanna make in the world?”
His act of generosity goes to show that good things can have a profound effect on others, no matter how small. And even though he struggled with certain aspects of his own life, Robin Williams was still able to change Lisa Jakub’s life for the better.
