It was 37 years ago today (Sept. 30, 2021) that Angela Lansbury began entertaining television audiences with her performance as the amateur detective Jessica Fletcher in the beloved drama “Murder, She Wrote.”

As fans of the show are aware, Lansbury’s character earned a living by being a professional writer. However, it was her amateur sleuthing that occupied most of her time. And, it was her work as an amateur sleuth that kept fans coming back season after season.

According to IMDb, “Murder, She Wrote,” was on the air from 1984 until 1996. During that time, the show gave fans 264 episodes to enjoy. Of course, Angela Lansbury appeared in all 264 of those episodes. Lansbury is now 95 years old.

“Murder, She Wrote” was created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson, and William Link. Joining Angela Lansbury in the cast was “Happy Days” star Tom Bosley. He appeared in 19 episodes during the early 1980s as the character of Sheriff Amos Tupper.

‘Murder, She Wrote’ Star Angela Lansbury Appeared With a ‘Blue Bloods’ Star in a Famous Broadway Musical

Angela Lansbury is a legend of both the stage and screen – both the big screen and the small. Her most famous television role, of course, is as Jessica Fletcher in “Murder, She Wrote.”

Her movie career is also one for the ages. The talented actress – who also has a beautiful singing voice – is also known for her roles in such films as “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Manchurian Candidate,” and “Anastasia.” She even made an appearance in the film “Mary Poppins Returns.”

However, pretty much any Broadway fan will recognize the “Murder, She Wrote” actress for one of her most famous stage roles. That role, of course, is that of Mrs. Lovette in the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Interestingly, Lansbury worked with “Blue Bloods” star Len Cariou in that famous production. Cariou played the character of Sweeney Todd alongside Landsbury as Mrs. Lovette. Both Lansbury and Cariou both received Tony Awards for their work in the show.

Basically, Angela Lansbury is a tour de force actress. She can perform comedy and drama flawlessly. And, she can sing beautifully. If you need evidence of her vocal skills, go find a recording of her singing pretty much any song from Sweeney Todd. Most of Stephen Sondheim’s songs are famously difficult for vocalists. And, Lansbury doesn’t falter at the challenge.

You can watch an example of her vocal talent below. And, “Blue Bloods” star Len Cariou joins her in this entertaining clip. They sing one of the most famous songs from the beloved musical. Enjoy!
