Following the September news of Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin’s upcoming 2021 NASCAR team, many sports fans have been eager to learn more about the team’s name, number, and sponsors. Now, official trademark filings may have given fans the information they’ve been yearning for.
A company called 2311 Racing LLC has filed for trademarks “23XI”, “23XI RACING”, as well as the number 23. Michael Jordan’s number throughout his iconic basketball career was #23 and Denny Hamlin’s races in the #11 car. As XI is the number eleven in Roman numerals, it is an easy assumption the ’23XI’ trademark and team name is a reference to the two’s impressive sport careers.
The most intriguing evidence of this potential trademark discovery is the address of the company that filed for the #23 trademarks. The address on the USPTO address is “5335 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Suite 720 Washington, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA UNITED STATES 20015,” which (after some Google Maps searching) tracks to The Sacks Group. The group is a sports entertainment law agency. Their clients’ page boasts a long list of athletic stars including Anthony Davis, Dikembe Mutombo, and Jayson Tatum. But who sits at the top of that list? You guessed it, NASCAR team owner, Michael Jordan.
Furthermore, North Carolina is listed as the “State Incorporated,” which is well-known as Michael Jordan’s state of residence.
The filings are visible to the public on the United States Patent and Trademarks Office website. USPTO is the federal agency that issues patents and registers trademarks for companies. The trademark filing was originally spotted by Matthew Mayer of CBS Sports.
Fans Shared Their Name and Number Predictions
Fans quickly began circulating social media posts following the news of Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin’s new team with hopes that the #23 would be blazoned across the car. NASCAR fans know the number is available and agree it would be a perfect choice for the all-star squad.
Bubba Wallace to Drive For Michael Jordan’s 2021 NASCAR Team
Bubba Wallace will drive for Jordan and Hamlin’s team in 2021. The driver announced his departure from Richard Petty Motorsports earlier this season and on September 21.
Denny Hamlin said of the team, “It just makes sense now to lay the foundation for my racing career after I’m done driving and also help an up-and-coming driver like Bubba take his career to a higher level.”
Hamlin also referenced the potential for social change that may come about with this new team. Bubba Wallace has hit headlines for his political Twitter posts and even received “boos” at a recent race. Hamlin thinks this new step in the three men’s careers is far from something to boo about though. “Michael and Bubba can be a powerful voice together,” Hamlin said. “Not only in our sport but also well beyond it.”
Bubba Wallace currently drives the #43. Following this trademark filing discovery and plenty of NASCAR fan whispers, it seems he may be knocking 20 off that number and speeding around the track in a flashy #23 this upcoming season.
