A new installment of the “National Treasure” universe will be coming to the Disney+ streaming service in the future. However, according to reports, this installment will not include the biggest star of the original two films.

That star, of course, is Nicolas Cage. He played the character of Benjamin Franklin Gates in the 2004 “National Treasure” film. He appeared again in its 2007 sequel, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.”

According to Looper, the project that is coming to Disney+ is a series based on the “National Treasure” universe. Instead of Nicolas Cage, leading the way in this version of the story is actress Lisette Alexis. She is definitely not a household name. But, she has won the confidence of the powers that be behind the new series.

Her short resume includes “Total Eclipse,” which is an online series. Alexis also had a role in the 2021 horror film “We Need to Do Something.”

The character Alexis will bring to life in this new series is Jess. This character has been described as “a Latina whose brilliant and resourceful mind loves a good mystery,” and who possesses “a natural talent for solving puzzles.”

That sounds a lot like Nicolas Cage’s Benajmin Gates character, doesn’t it?

New Character Will ‘Uncover Her Own Buried History’ in New ‘National Treasure’ Series

While Gates searched for clues surrounding the Declaration of Independence and the Founding Fathers of America in the first film, Lisette Alexis will use her talents to discover something else in the series. It has been reported that she “embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.”

Alexis is also a DREAMer. She was brought to the United States of America when she was a child and she was raised as an American. Her search for that “Pan-American treasure” will also give her the opportunity to learn about who she is.

“Over the course of the show, Jess will uncover her own buried history, as well as the truth about her parents and her connection to a long-lost treasure,” Deadline also reported.

The new Disney+ series will begin filming in 2022.

While Nicolas Cage is not expected to put part of the “National Treasure” series on Disney+ that doesn’t necessarily mean that he is completely done with the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates. In fact, famous producer Jerry Bruckheimer has previously claimed that Cage will be part of the cast for the next film in the series. Bruckheimer is also a producer of the new series.

Also, creating new series based on older projects is something Disney+ has been undertaking recently. “National Treasure” isn’t the only such project. Others included series based on “Willow,” “The Mighty Ducks,” and even “Turner & Hooch.”
