As we begin to gear up for the long-awaited fall-premiere season, there are many questions regarding the fate of some important characters on our favorite shows that we are eager to find answers to. One of the biggest mysteries fans are waiting to find answers to this fall is what will come of Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs as the nineteenth season of “NCIS” gets underway.

Shortly after the “NCIS” season eighteen finale, fans learned that Mark Harmon, the actor who plays the fan-favorite “NCIS” officer was looking to leave the long-running show. A staple on the popular CBS procedural series since it premiered in 2003, the loss of Leroy Jethro Gibbs will clearly be devastating for fans.

While news quickly spread that Mark Harmon has been considering leaving “NCIS,” the show has also confirmed that season nineteen will not be without Gibbs entirely. Harmon himself has confirmed Gibbs will be a part of the “NCIS” nineteenth season. However, for the first time since the show’s premiere, Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs will no longer be a lead character in the series.

Could The ‘NCIS’ Season 18 Finale Hold Answers About Gibbs’s Future

This information, coupled with the “NCIS” season eighteen finale, has many longtime “NCIS” fans worried that we may have already witnessed Gibbs’s fate. Or at least, the start of the series of events that will lead to something big.

The “NCIS” season eighteen finale left the Gibbs in a precarious spot on his team, as well as on his beloved boat.

In the finale episode, agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs has been suspended for assaulting a man that abused dogs. This in and of itself put Gibbs’s future with the team at risk.

While “NCIS” viewers were still dealing with this series of events, and Gibbs’s suspension, the agent finds himself in yet another difficult spot as he takes to the water during the last moments of this season eighteen finale episode.

Dealing with the suspension, Gibbs boards his boat, Rule 91, and takes to the seas. Then fans are shaken by an unexpected explosion on the boat.

However, fans of the series were relieved to see Gibbs swimming away from the shocking explosion. While this does confirm the agent was alive after the tragedy, fans are curious to know exactly, what will happen next.

Will Gibbs Just Take Retirement?

However, according to CBS Entertainment boss, Kelly Kahl, the idea the series would kill Harmon off is likely not something that will happen. Along with being a fan favorite on “NCIS” for nineteen seasons, the executives like to see him on the show as well.

“We take it year by year with Mark,” said Kahl of Harmon. “We’d love to have him as long as he’d like to be here.”

Kahl added that the network and “NCIS” producers are always willing to work with the Leroy Jethro Gibbs actor.

“Even in this past season, he might have been light in a couple of [episodes],” said Kahl. “We’re happy to work around his schedule.”

News like this suggests that the show is very unlikely to kill off Gibbs. What is much more likely to happen is that the agent will likely retire from his duties. Or move away to other opportunities; opening up the possibility that the character could return to guest star in the future.
