NCIS lead actor Mark Harmon has been on the show playing Gibbs for almost 20 years. Who would be better suited to play a young version of Gibbs than Harmon’s own son? That’s exactly what happened.

Sean Harmon has played “young Gibbs” on the show for six episodes. He even appeared in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles.

Harmon has two kids with his wife, Pam Dawber. Dawber has also been on the show, playing investigative journalist Marcie Warren. Marcie Warren was a pretty major character in the season 18 finale of NCIS, and will hopefully work alongside Gibbs again next season.

While Sean Harmon may be an obvious choice due to the fact that Mark is his dad, that didn’t mean the NCIS part was handed to him. Harmon explained the process with ET Online last year.

“I always think back to the first time they talked about doing a young Gibbs thing here, and Sean was just out of school at that point. A director named Tony Wharmby said, ‘Can he come in and read?’ And on his own he did and I’m proud of him taking his work seriously and how he approaches being an actor — not just on this show, [but] just what he has chosen to try to do in his life’s work,” he said, clearly gushing over his son’s shared acting talent.

Harmon’s other son, Ty, is a bit more private. Mark expressed that he was thrilled with how both of them turned out.

“I’m proud of both our boys, and they work hard at what they do and I’m proud that they get up in the morning and try to do that every day,” the NCIS star said.

Harmon’s Wife Turned Down Appearing on ‘NCIS’ Multiple Times

While Harmon’s son Sean may have been keen on doing a role on NCIS immediately, it took his wife, Pam Dawber, some time to come around. While the actress has expressed no distaste for NCIS, it’s just never really been the right time or the right role.

‘They have come at me a few times,” she told Entertainment Weekly. Either I just didn’t want to do it or I didn’t appreciate what [they] wanted me to do. Or it was near Christmas and it was like, ‘I can’t do this.'”.

She also expressed that she’s picky with her roles now that she’s older.

“I just haven’t been interested in, you know, chasing the business. At this age, that’s what you do. You’d have to really want it.”

Thankfully, she did with Marcy. Her time on the show has been a treat for many, who love how she works alongside Gibbs.

The season 18 finale left Gibbs in peril, potentially faking his own death or going on the run. Whatever the case may be, he certainly isn’t safe, having his boat blown up by a serial killer. It seems as if Harmon will appear in a very limited amount of episodes next season, and if it is his last, hopefully, we’ll get to see Pam Dawber and Sean Harmon on screen too.
