‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star Daniela Ruah Revealed Her Parenting Philosophy: ‘It’s Our Job’

NCIS: Los Angeles actress Daniela Ruah has a pretty incredible parenting philosophy. The actress plays Kensi on the hit procedural. On the show, Kensi is trying to have kids with her husband Deeks.

In the real world, Deeks actor Eric Christian Olsen is actually Ruah’s brother-in-law. Ruah has two kids with her husband David Olsen, a stuntman who she met on set. Their philosophy with parenting? Approaching everything with love.

“Dave and I share the philosophy that it’s our job to show our kids the world, and then it’s theirs to let us know what they love about it and we’ll focus on those things. And every decision we make, whether it is about disciplining them or appreciating something they’ve done, it all comes from a place of extreme love,” the actress told CBS Watch Magazine.

Ruah often takes to social media to gush about their kids. She also posted a photo with Eric Olsen’s wife while on vacation. Clearly, the two couples are close.

The ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Crew Sometimes Film Ruah and Eric Olsen in a Special Way

Eric Olsen and Daniela Ruah are so dynamic when acting as Kensi and Deeks, that the crew often films the two in a unique way. This allows the two, who have a very strong dynamic, to more fully act out the scene and play with different tones.

Typically, you’ll have a camera on each actor and then a camera behind them, but Ruah explained why that doesn’t always work for the two actors.

“Sometimes you kind of have to have a camera on both of them simultaneously because the things that you get in the moment are going to be different every single take. One of them might be in a more emotional place or a quieter place whatever it is. To get the matching reaction from the other person you have to enjoy that there’s a camera on both,” she explained at a 2017 comic con panel.

The two are always aware of how the cameras are set up for a particular shot. They usually break out this method for bigger moments or exchanges with the couple.

Both Actors Think the Couple Needs to Stay Together

In that same comic-con panel, both actors talked about how it makes sense for the couple to stay together. Ruah went as far as saying anything else would be “unfair” considering how much both of them have gone through.

“I think it would be really really unfair if they didn’t end up together happily married with children or something,” she said after talking about all of the loved ones that Kensi has lost.

While the couple is trying to have children, they haven’t had any luck so far. Hopefully, that’ll change in season 13. NCIS: Los Angeles will return this fall on CBS.
