‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star LL Cool J Tributes Friend, Former Record Label Mogul Chris Lighty Nine Years on From His Death

NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J took to his Instagram on Monday (August 30th) to pay tribute to his friend and former record label mogul Chris Lighty on the ninth anniversary of his death.

“Rest in power 🙏🏾♥️,” the NCIS: Los Angeles star captioned the post, which featured a snapshot of Lighty smiling.

Lighty notably founded the record label Violator. The label managed NCIS: Los Angeles star Cool J along with other hip hop and R&B artists. This includes Busta Rymes, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. Lighty was also considered one of the most powerful figures in the hip hop business by the New York Times.

On August 30, 2012, Lighty was reportedly found dead on the patio of his South Riverdale, Bronx apartment. He had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. According to The New York Daily News, Lighty was found face-up with a 9mm pistol next to his body. 

‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star LL Cool J Opens Up About His Rock the Bells Platform & Making Music 

During a 2020 interview with Revolt, NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J opened up about how his Rock the Bells platform continues to support hip hop culture. “I want to have a place where trailblazing icons and the pioneers that shaped the culture could get their love. Could get their respect. And I wanted the culture as a whole to get the respect that I believe it deserves.”

The NCIS: Los Angeles castmate said he took on a leadership role on the platform to preserve the legacy of classic hip hop. Which is ultimately the platform’s goal.

“A hundred years from now, I wanna make sure that people remember the artists that help shape and form this culture that we’re all enjoying.”

When asked what else he is doing for the Black community, NCIS Cool J explained he has a basketball camp called Jump & Bell. He goes on to add, “[The camp kids are] learning about teamwork, sacrifice, being on time, putting the work in, effort, ethics, and that’s a beautiful thing.”

LL Cool J Shares Thoughts About NCIS: Los Angeles Popularity 

While also chatting with Forbes, LL Cool J talked about the popularity that NCIS: Los Angeles has gained over the years. “We have some really loyal fans. I really don’t have the answer. Because to have the answer would presume that I know exactly what it takes to make a hit show.”

LL Cool J also stated that the NCIS: Los Angeles characters are relatable to viewers. He also believes that relatability is giving a certain amount of comfort to the action-packed series fans. 

NCIS: Los Angeles Season 13th premiere date is set to take place on October 10th.
