Here’s a prediction. NCIS: Los Angeles fans are going to love all the snide office conversations between Hetty and Kilbride this season. After all, one of their first chats involved a cockroach named Sheldon and a diplomatic disaster.

Sunday night is the season 13 premiere. And NCIS: Los Angeles dropped a sneak peek, via TVLine on Wednesday, to give fans a taste of what’s to come.

Hetty (Linda Hunt) needs to return to Syria. That’s where she spent most of season 12. But Kilbride (Gerald McRaney) doesn’t think it’s such a good idea. Here’s the conversation that unfolded:

NCIS: Los Angeles Will Feature This Sort of Clever Banter

Kilbride walks into Hetty’s office and says: “you will never believe what just came across my desk.”

Hetty plays coy. “If it was a large cockroach with only one antennae, his name is Sheldon and he’s become some sort of office mascot. “

Kilbride didn’t hesitate: “I put him through my shredder last week. No one told me he had a name. No, these were travel orders. Do you think you’re going back?” Hetty says she has to go back.

So Kilbride responds: “I think somebody has to, but I’m not so sure it has to be you. You made a bloody mess of things over there the last time. I will sign the order. But if you make it worse, you will be sacrificed for the sake of diplomacy. You do something really stupid and find yourself in a cage, again, you will be disavowed. “

Hetty quips “well, that’s really terribly encouraging.” Click this link to check out the video.

So yes, Hetty’s so-called mess was in Syria. And Sunday’s NCIS: Los Angeles episode called Subject 17 will start to reveal just what Hetty did there in season 12.

NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner Scott Gemmill told TVLine.com that Kilbride will allow Hetty to go back and fix the situation. But it’ll get so complicated that she’ll need the rest of the agents to help her out.

And while Hetty is gone, Kilbride will be in charge. Between seasons, McRaney was promoted to full-time cast, so there will be lots of office banter between Hetty and Kilbride. It might be the highlight of every episode they’re in.

Good Part of Premiere Devoted to Callen-Hetty Dynamic

The rest of Sunday’s premiere will delve into Callen’s relationship with Hetty. Gemmill said: “Callen finds something that will definitely change his relationship, at least for the time being, with someone very close to him. He will discover that Hetty was in his life a lot sooner than he ever realized.”

Hetty recruited Callen to NCIS: Los Angeles. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) grew up in the foster system. It turns out that his long-dead Romanian mother worked for the CIA. Hetty was her handler. Hetty eventually plucked Callen out of juvenile detention and helped set his life straight. But how long was she aware of Callen before she swooped in and helped turn his life around?
