NCIS: Los Angeles actor Eric Christian Olsen once revealed the “long and arduous” journey his character had to go on to get to where he is. Deeks has certainly undergone a ton of character development in the series. However, he started out the series already having fought major battles due to his difficult backstory.
NCIS: Los Angeles premiered in 2009. Deeks appeared in two episodes in season 1. Originally intended to just be a side character, Deeks became a fan favorite, and Olsen was promoted to a regular.
Olsen opened about Deeks in an interview with the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo. Deeks doesn’t have an easy backstory, so it makes his position as the LAPD Liason for NCIS even more impressive.
Eric Olsen’s Deeks had a Rough Childhood
“Something that’s so fantastic about Deeks […] is that there’s an underlying history to the character. I think that he’s obviously come from a very tumultuous relationship with his father and maybe no relationship with his mother,” Olsen explained. But that never stopped Deeks from pursuing education and doing his very best.
“He dedicated himself to education and put himself through school and became a lawyer and for some reason bailed on that because of some sort of ideals or moral compass that was lost. Then [he] became a detective,” Olsen said. That long journey is what got Deeks to the position he is in at the start of the show. It certainly wasn’t an easy one.
“The journey to where he is now is a long and arduous one,” he noted.
Some Fans Worried Olsen Wouldn’t Return to ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ For Season 13
At the beginning of season 12, Deeks is fired from his position with the LAPD due to job cuts, and what’s next for the character is still not quite clear. When this first happened, fans worried that Eric Olsen was eyeing an exit from the show and that Deeks getting fired was the beginning of the end for his character. But thankfully, that’s not the case.
Eric Olsen is back on set for season 13 and seems thrilled to be there. He’ll probably have a big role with his character undergoing tons of change. With a combination of losing his job and trying to have a child, Deeks is certainly in a major transition period.
Olsen and some of his other co-stars keep posting fun pictures and behind-the-scenes videos on their Instagram pages. Daniela Ruah, for instance, recently posted an Instagram story that featured her and Eric Olsen goofing off on set.
But even with brief moments of goofing off, they’re hard at work with a season premiere date coming up soon. If you want to catch Eric Olsen and the rest of the cast on NCIS: Los Angeles season 13, tune in to CBS on Sunday, October 10th at 10/9 C.
