‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star Eric Christian Olsen Looks Forward to Return to Filming

Eric Christian Olsen is checking off the days until NCIS: Los Angeles starts production for season 13.

It’s like it’s a holiday or something. But rather than counting down to opening presents or eating some tasty food, Olsen can hardly wait to don a bullet-proof vest. On NCIS: Los Angeles, it’s all relative.

Christiansen, who portrays Marty Deeks, posted about his show via his Instagram stories, Monday.

The first was a photo of Christiansen, as Deeks, wearing tactical gear. He captioned it, “Three days until I strap this vest on again. Let’s get it.” And he tagged CBS and CBS Studios.

Then, it was “I see you Sunday and you look …” And that post came with references to the CBS Sunday lineup of The Equalizer, NCIS: Los Angeles and SEAL Team. Plus, there was a reference to the key premiere date of Oct. 10 — set a reminder on your calendar.

Then, there this random post, “me when Tom Selleck comes on screen.” Selleck, as we all know, is a long-time member of the CBS family. He plays the New York City police commissioner in Blue Bloods.

NCIS: Los Angeles, and the other shows on Sunday night, are some of the last CBS shows to launch their season premieres for 2021-22. Earlier Monday, CBS announced the premiere dates for its fall lineup. NCIS and the new franchise NCIS: Hawai’i will start Sept. 20. Maybe that’ll give people enough time to find the shows. NCIS, which is headed into its 19th season, also is headed to a new night. It switches from Tuesday to Monday and will help launch the Hawai’i franchise.

NCIS: Los Angeles has pressing business to take care of when filming starts later this week. The main one is replacing two characters. Barrett Foa (Eric Beale) and Renee Felice Smith (Nell Jones) left the show at the end of season 12. Eric was the NCIS: Los Angeles tech-consultant and Bell served as an intelligence agent.

Scott Gemmill, NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner, left fans reasons to think Nell and/or Eric may be seen again.

In an interview with TV Line, Gemmill said: “Both Renée and Barrett have been on the show a long time, and they’re both very ambitious individuals who have projects that they want to do on their own. And we’ve been giving them time off to do so. It seemed like a natural time to let them go off and do some other things and give (their characters) what is a happy, hopefully, ending.”

Gemmill continued: “There’s a little loophole in there when Nell says she’s going to be alone in Tokyo with Eric. And she gives it ‘six weeks’ before she’s back. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Gerald McRaney, who plays Admiral Hollace Kilbride, was elevated to full-time cast member.

NCIS: Los Angeles also should have Linda Hunt back for more episodes as Hetty. Hunt, who is 76, shot her season 12 scenes from her driveway. She was at higher risk for Covid-19, so she didn’t come to the studio until she filmed her final scene in the finale. Writers explained that Hetty was off in a war-torn part of the world.
