NCIS: Los Angeles fans are speculating that maybe Fatima will take over for Hetty next season, but does that theory hold much water?
As season 13 quickly approaches, many are trying to put together information gleaned from behind-the-scenes photos and videos. The future of Hetty’s character has been in question for years. It was particularly highlighted last year when actress Linda Hunt had to step back from the season due to COVID-19 precautions.
In most of season 12, Hetty appeared on video chat from a top-secret location. She also let Nell take over for her in her absence. But Nell is now gone. That, on top of a video Fatima Namazi actress Medalion Rahimi jokingly posted of herself sitting in Hetty’s chair, has led fans to speculate.
Hetty Will Return for ‘NCIS: Los Angeles Season 13’
If Fatima will end up taking over for Hetty, it’s incredibly unlikely that it’s any time soon. Linda Hunt is enthusiastically returning to NCIS: Los Angeles for season 13. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmil said in an interview with TV Line that Hunt was incredibly excited to return to set. He claimed that that the moment she arrived “she was like, ‘Let’s talk about next season…,”
And while last year was difficult for everyone, Hunt feels safe enough to return. It’s incredibly unlikely Hetty would return to anything but her old desk with her job still intact.
“So I think that as tough as last year was, for a lot of reasons, she, like the rest of us, is starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel and feels good about coming back to work,” he continued.
And since Hetty is coming back to work, a lot of the focus will be on explaining where she was and why she was gone for so long.
“You normally wouldn’t ever write one of your No 1 through 6 actors out for four or five episodes, because you couldn’t afford to,” Gemmill said. “But when they have to for whatever reason, you try and jump at that because that’s something you don’t normally get to do, and you build that into the story. Like, “Where is this character?” Obviously, Hetty was away, but we want there to be a real reason, and we’ll probably revisit that next season.”
There’s plenty to address in season 13 with many fan-favorite characters returning. NCIS: Los Angeles season 13 could really be one for the books. You can catch the season premiere on Sunday, October 10th on CBS. There are also two other shows in the NCIS franchise coming back this fall. NCIS season 19 and the brand new NCIS: Hawai’i will premiere on Monday, September 10th.
While it’s unlikely we’ll see a power shift for Fatima this season, that doesn’t mean she won’t take over for Hetty sometime in the future. For now, fans will just have to wait and see.
