NCIS: Los Angeles just wished Admiral Kilbride actor Gerald McRaney a Happy Birthday. McRaney has been playing the hilariously gloomy Kilbride for years. He has now been promoted to a full-time member of the cast for season 13.

“Behind every great team is an Admiral Kilbride calling the shots and griping about smartphones. Give it up for the boss himself on his birthday, Gerald McRaney!” the NCIS: Los Angeles Twitter just said.

The ever-pessimistic yet incredibly likable Kilbride will be a welcome full-time addition to next season. NCIS: Los Angeles is currently shooting season 13, with season one already finished up, and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill is thrilled to have McRaney on board full time.

“When you have an actor of Gerald McRaney’s caliber, you do everything you can to make sure you get him as often as possible,” he told Deadline. “Admiral Kilbride has been an esteemed part of our universe for seven years now and we look forward to viewers seeing him come in and shake up our NCIS: LA world.”

McRaney Joining the Cast Full Time After the Departure of Two ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Cast Members

McRaney is joining the cast after the departure of Eric actor Barrett Foa and Nell actress Reneé Felice Smith. Both actors left the series to engage in other creative pursuits. But don’t worry, the season shouldn’t feel empty.

On top of McRaney becoming a full-time player, Hetty actress Linda Hunt is also re-joining the cast. Hunt was unable to fully participate in season 12 due to COVID-19 related precautions, but it had fans worried about whether or not she’d return to the show. Luckily, her absence was only temporary. Season 13 will address what exactly Hetty was up to during her time away.

While Smith and Foa left the show to pursue other ventures, the decision still wasn’t an easy one. But according to showrunner R Scott Gemmill, he knew it was their time.

“It seemed like a natural time to let them go off and do some other things and give them what is a happy, hopefully, ending,” Gemmill told TV Insider earlier this year.

The rest of the cast, Ll Cool J, Chris O’Donnell, Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen, and Medalion Rahimi will all be returning to the show this year. NCIS: Los Angeles had a very positive and peaceful season finale, but there are still plenty of questions left unanswered that fans are excited to see addressed.

If you’re excited to catch the season premiere, mark your calendar for Sunday, October 10th when the hit show will return to its usual timeslot on CBS. If you’re too impatient to wait that long, the two other NCIS shows, NCIS and the brand new NCIS: Hawai’i will air on Monday, September 20th.
