“NCIS” star Michael Weatherly once miserably failed a pop quiz during trivia about the show. The interview aired on ExtraTV with host Maria Menounos in 2012. The beloved actor’s answers absolutely paled in comparison to his costars, who got practically every question right.
One of the very first questions the host asks is, “Who said this on your show: ‘Facebook. That’s the thing that some people do stuff with?'” Now for any true NCIS fan, you can almost guarantee the answer is none other than technology-deficient Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Apparently, Weatherly isn’t a fan, because he makes several guesses before Maria practically hands him the correct answer. Nevertheless, we can’t be sure when Weatherly or his character, Tony Dinozzo, are being entirely serious. For his sake, we hope he was playing around.
Contrastly, Weatherly’s costar Cote de Pablo, whose character Ziva is frequently known for misunderstanding American language and vocabulary, proceeds to get every single answer correct. Additionally, she follows through in true Ziva fashion when she busts in on Weatherly’s turn to provide the right answer and hop away.
Michael Weatherly Opened Up About His Role on ‘NCIS’ Following His Departure
If you watched the trivia game in the hyperlink above as a dedicated “NCIS” fan, watching Weatherly be himself throughout probably broke your heart. At least, it broke ours. Following Weatherly’s departure from “NCIS” in 2016, the actor opened up to TV Insider about his experience. He further shared what it felt like to be Special Agent Gibbs’s no. 2 on the show for so many years.
While fans would agree that the pair made the perfect hero-sidekick combination, Weatherly detailed how exhausting it became. To never fill that leading role over his 13 seasons appearing on the show made the actor feel stuck. “You can’t be in that No. 2 slot [on Gibbs’ team] forever…That started to feel constrained to me,” the actor confessed. At one point during the interview, Weatherly shared a dialogue from a scene on the show where Agent McGee says, “When you get out of here I want to be No. 2.” The star stated that at that point, Gibbs looked at him “like, ‘You’re kind of just hanging around. Have you got things you want to do?'”
After that admittance, it’s easy to understand why Weatherly decided to leave the show after more than a dozen seasons. During that same interview, he said, “I always appreciated the gift of the job, but the hardest part of the whole experience was thinking, ‘Oh no…I think it’s time I have to leave.'” CBS ended Weatherly’s role on the show when DiNozzo discovered his former partner Ziva had a daughter, and he decided to leave to care for her. Despite that it’s been about five years since the fan-favorite left the show, “NCIS” fans still hope for a reappearance from Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo.
