‘NCIS: New Orleans’ Star Lucas Black Landed His First Audition Because His Mom Wanted to Meet ‘Yellowstone’ Star Kevin Costner

When you set out in pursuit of your dreams it’s always nice to have the support of your family behind you. This is especially the case for budding actors about to embark on one of the most difficult career paths: show business. This was certainly true for “NCIS: New Orleans” star Lucas Black. Before he even knew he wanted to be an actor, Black’s mother supported him.

In fact, she found him his first audition. However, she may have been more motivated to meet a celebrity than to help her son become a Hollywood star. Nevertheless, she was there to support him every step of the way.

During a recent interview, Black shared how his mother found him his first audition.

“I didn’t know there was such a thing as acting growing up. Everything I watched on TV was sports and outdoor shows…so pretty much everything I watched, I thought was real,” said Black. “I didn’t know there was a thing called ‘acting.’”

That is until his mom heard about a casting call on the radio.

“My mom, she heard about an open audition on the radio,” said Black. “It was for the movie ‘The War.’ And she heard that Kevin Costner was going to be in it.”

Black then joked about his mother’s true motivations behind brining him to the audition.

“Really, I think she brought me to the audition because she thought maybe Kevin Costner was going to be there,” he said with a laugh. “No, really, I think she just knew from my personality that I wouldn’t be scared to be myself and just act naturally.”

Did Lucas Black’s Mom Ever Meet Kevin Costner?

So, how did the audition go? Well, Lucas Black did exactly what his mama thought he’d do – he acted just like himself.

“There were 11 characters in the movie and the director wanted kids who had never acted before…So they called us in, there were about 5,000 kids there, and they called us in groups of 50.”

Black said that the casting directors asked the kids to tell them their name, age and where they lived. Most of the kids replied with their address. But Black gave the ultimate country boy directions.

“I said, ‘Well, you go down 157…you go by Mickey Wiggins store and you turn left…’ and they were like ‘We need you to read some lines, kid.’ Just because I said something different from every other kid. So that was my first audition and I ended up getting the part.”

He didn’t say whether or not his mom ever had the chance to meet “Yellowstone” star Kevin Costner. But we’re hoping Lucas Black makes it happen for her. It’s the least he can do to thank her for setting him off on his path to Hollywood.
