NCIS has dominated the ratings since its debut in 2003, but the show may be coming to an end soon. Earlier in the year, CBS renewed the show for season 19. Leading actor Mark Harmon, rumored to want to leave, will return to the show, but just how much is still unclear.

It would be hard to put on NCIS without Mark Harmon. His role as Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs has been the heart of the show for many viewers. Apparently, CBS recognized this.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon told CBS executives he was planning to leave the show. Executives then told the actor that they would end NCIS without him on the cast, so Harmon agreed to re-enter negotiations.

It’s possible that Harmon advocated for a final season that would do the series justice, but allow him to leave. The actor has spent time on the show for nearly 20 years, and executives are still keen to keep him on. There’s no NCIS without Gibbs, and for CBS, it’ll be hard to maintain record-smashing ratings without NCIS.

NCIS Finale Saw A Major Character Leave

The shocking finale of NCIS, which aired last night, said goodbye to one of the main characters. Agent Bishop, who was played by Emily Wickersham, departed the series. After the finale, the actress confirmed her departure from the show.

“Hangin’ this hat and jacked up. What a great ride it’s been,” she said in an Instagram post “This cast, this crew, are top-notch. I can’t say enough kind words about this group that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. This business is finicky and weird, and consistency is a rarity.

She also described her time on the show as “A moment in time I surely won’t forget. Thank you, CBS and NCIS, for including me in a part of television history. Time goes fast. Eat it up but chew slowly.”

The last seasons were impacted and shortened due to covid-19. Therefore, it’s unclear if Season 19 will have the same amount of episodes as the last season or go back to its regular episode amount.

The show has moved to Monday slots after years of airing on Tuesday. This will allow the FBI series to air on Tuesdays and NCIS to air before the all-new NCIS: Hawai’i. Whether it’s the show’s last season or it has five more, NCIS will air this fall, probably in late September.
