‘NCIS’: Sean Murray Explained How He Got in Shape Over Course of Show

In terms of the cast of the popular crime drama, “NCIS,” only a few characters have stuck around for the show’s entirety.

Mark Harmon, the main character and also the executive producer of the show now, has been around since day one. That includes the two episodes from the CBS series “JAG,” which the show is a spin-off of. Another actor that has been around since the beginning is David McCallum as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, who started out as the team’s chief medical examiner.

Other actors, such as Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, Brian Dietzen, and Emily Wickersham, spent years on the show. However, eventually, they said goodbye to the long-running program. Sean Murray, who plays Timothy McGee, has been around almost since the very beginning. He started out in one episode, but producers saw something in him and a chemistry with the team that was irreplaceable. He had a recurring role in the first season before becoming a season regular for season two.

He’s now spent close to two decades playing his fan-favorite character. Fans were always quick to point out changes in his appearance over the years. In an interview with Studio 10 from 2020, Sean Murray made it clear that it’s only natural to look different over the course of that many years.

Sean Murray ‘NCIS’ Weight Changes

“We have been on for like almost 20 years, so there’s going to be some changes along the way,” he said.

So, what contributed to some of his weight loss and gain over the years?

“It’s easy to get lazy on a set and eat a lot of food and do all that stuff, so you really try to watch yourself and take care of yourself when you can. When I’ve had some free time I’ve used the opportunity as of late to try and take care of myself and eat a lot better. That stuff shows on me. I’m just one of those it shows right on my face if I lose weight or gain weight, it’s real easy to see on me,” Sean Murray said.

Even a fan on Reddit was annoyed that people feel the need to constantly discuss his weight and appearance. “He said he’s fine when people said the same thing about his weight loss a decade ago and it’s 2021 now, and he’s still fine. He’s not sick or anything, he just lost his weight by jogging out or doing something healthy,” the user wrote in a post.

Murray has also discussed the weight loss in tweets over the years. In September 2010 he wrote, “[T]o those who have asked what I did to lose the 25 lbs: 14 months of no alcohol and almost no sugar. ate strictly organic.”

Sean Murray is still staying alongside “NCIS” for the foreseeable future. He is a main cast member again for the upcoming season 19 premiering in the fall. He will join Mark Harmon (who has a reduced role) as well as new castmates Gary Cole and Katrina Law.
