‘NCIS’ Star Sean Murray Explains Why He Pressed to Do Some of His Own Stunts in Season 18

by Megan Molseed

“NCIS” fans know that the hit CBS series is never short of action-packed excitement. And, season 18 was no disappointment on that front.

As the 18th season of “NCIS” opened, we saw Sean Murray’s character, “NCIS” cybersecurity specialist Timothy McGee dodging bullets. Bullets fired at him by his own boss, “NCIS” team leader, and McGee’s longtime associate, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon.

The moment is intense, and the action is non-stop. And, many of the moments during this intense scene are very real.

During the shooting of some of the show’s most intense and action-packed moments, actor Sean Murray has made it clear that it’s important to him that he performs some of his own stunts.

During a recent TVLine interview, the “NCIS” actor discussed what inspired him to start doing his own stunts. As well as what it was like putting himself in some dangerous positions to make sure the scenes were just right.

“Obviously, you don’t want to put people in dangerous situations unless they are qualified to do that as their job,” Murray said of choosing to do his own stunts. Murray added that while it’s important to leave the big moments to the professionals, he’s willing to take a small injury or two – if it makes a scene more believable.

“I don’t mind taking a couple of cuts and bruises if it’s going to look a lot better,” he said. “So as that sequence progresses, we were able to do a lot of really cool shots.”

“NCIS” Star Keeping It Real While Playing It Safe

While the “NCIS” star did take pride in the scenes where he stayed to perform his own stunts, he again made it clear that he only does so when it’s safe.

“I’m not trying to toot my own horn,” he said, adding that he was entirely into the take when the action was happening. “If we can get this, let’s just do it.”

And, the actor’s eagerness paid off when the producers ended up using Sean in each of the takes, without any stunt-doubles in the intense season 18 episode.

“We ended up not using stunt people in that sequence, whereas normally they would have,” he said. “But I wasn’t in any real danger.”

Ready For More In Season 19!

While “NCIS” season eighteen provided quite a bit of excitement for viewers season nineteen is promising to be just as good.

There will be some changes as new characters are added, and others begin to spend less time with the team.

We met Jessica Knight in season eighteen and she quickly became a fan favorite. Portrayed by Katrina Law, Knight is stubborn but fiercely loyal to her team. She is a bit of a loose cannon as she has proven she will do what she thinks is the right thing to do, even if its’ not always “by the book.”

Additionally, actor Gary Cole will be joining the series in season nineteen. Not much is known about his character yet. Although, many speculate that his character may stand in for Gibbs in many episodes. It has been rumored that Mark Harmon’s character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs will only be featured in a few episodes during the nineteenth season of “NCIS.”
