‘NCIS’ Showrunner Hints at Reunion Between Gibbs and Rest of Cast in Season 19

Ever since the shocking eighteenth season finale of NCIS, fans have been wondering – what will happen with Leroy Gibbs after his final moments on screen this spring.

In the last moments of the NCIS eighteenth season, fans witnessed Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) drive away on the water, enjoying some time aboard his cherished boat.

Then suddenly, there was an explosion…and Gibbs’s boat went up in flames. While the officer was still on board.

Fans were understandably shocked, as the NCIS leader was left floating in the water as the show wrapped for the season.

Thankfully, just before the episode ended, fans witnessed the NCIS officer begin to swim away. However, what is going to happen next is unknown. And, it has left fans uncertain as to what this development will mean for Gibbs’s future.

Waiting For Answers In NCIS Season Nineteen

All summer, rumors have been swirling when it comes to anything regarding Gibbs’s fate as NCIS returns for its nineteenth season this fall.

New characters have been added to the popular CBS drama. Some of these additions, fans suggest, may even work as a fill-in for Gibbs’s spot.

No one really knows for sure what the future holds for Gibbs as we approach the show’s September 20 season premiere. However, one of the NCIS showrunners, Steven D. Binder, recently spoke with TV Line, offering up a few hints regarding what fans can expect as the “NCIS” season nineteen gets underway.

“We shot a lot of different things for that [sequence], and there were a lot of different ways to cut it,” Binder noted of the shocking finale.

“And what we left with was something that we felt left all possibilities open,” continued the NCIS showrunner. “We know he’s not dead right there, and we know he’s able to swim well enough…. All things are still possible with Gibbs.”

Binder added that even if Gibbs were to be facing an exit from his NCIS duties, there are still quite a few lingering storylines to finish before he leaves; especially one of the show’s most important storylines from last season, his hunt for a serial killer.

“Gibbs has been hunting down this serial killer, and he’s doing it alone,” Binder pointed out. “He’s cut off from his team… but in the beginning episodes, that’s going to change.”

How Much Time Does Gibbs Have Left?

So, now we know that Gibbs will be returning in the newest NCIS season. However, we still don’t know exactly what that means.

Since the explosive ending of the eighteenth season of NCIS, it has been widely reported that should Gibbs return this season, it would only be for a few episodes. This news came from reports that Harmon had been planning on exiting the series.

However, noted Binder, not all of the stories are true.

“What we’re trying to focus on right now is telling the best stories we can with the characters we have, and Gibbs is a part of that world,” Binder explained, noting he thinks season nineteen will satisfy the dedicated NCIS fans. “I think we’re doing a pretty good job with that.”
