Last night’s episode of “NCIS” saw Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) deciding to stay in Alaska, America’s Last Frontier.
While Gibbs is seemingly leaving behind his life as an “NCIS” agent, will it be the last time we see his character?
Gibbs has been around on “NCIS” since the very beginning. He first appeared as his popular stoic, back-of-the-head-slapping agent during a backdoor pilot on “JAG” in 2003.
Now, after 19 seasons, it’s a bittersweet goodbye for longtime fans of the program. In many ways, Mark Harmon was one of the few consistencies the show had over the course of its continuous run. It made some fans question if “NCIS” should continue at all.
Gibbs and Mark Harmon Open to Come Back
Although Gibbs emotionally told McGee last night, “I’m not going back, Tim,” we may see him again at some point in the future. Although “NCIS” scarily hinted at it, Gibbs at least didn’t get killed off. That means a reappearance is never officially off the table.
Mark Harmon left shortly after his wife, Pam Dawber, made an appearance on the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Harmon is always welcome on “NCIS.” He is also still going to work as a producer on the series, but wanted to step back from his onscreen role.
“As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show. Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go. So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years … never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out,” the showrunner and executive producer, Steven D. Binder, said to the news outlet.
Also, the series has had several interesting character reappearances over the years. Likely the most memorable is when Ziva was thought to be dead but then returned back to “NCIS” for a limited time.
Over the years, “NCIS” has also lost several beloved characters that were key parts of the cast. That includes Michael Weatherly as Agent DiNozzo, Pauley Perrette as Abby Sciuto, and Emily Wickersham as Agent Bishop.
You truly never know what to expect with the long-running procedural drama. It seems hard to believe that Gibbs will never be shown again, which has fans emotional.
Possible Return of Other Popular Character
Also, many are speculating if the show will continue into another season now that Harmon is gone. He was what many considered the lifeline of the series.
As for returning characters, some fans are speculating about the return of Weatherly as DiNozzo to the program. Many see him as the perfect Gibbs replacement. He left and started his own show, “Bull.”
He’s been teasing fans for a bit now about a possible return. In 2018, he tweeted, “Yes I believe Ziva is alive and I will always be ready to play DiNozzo when the time is right…” in response to a fan’s question.
He’s also been very candid about the fact that he is open to returning to the CBS program if it seems right. This may be the right time.
