You know him as one of your favorite NCIS agents. However, what you may not know is that Mark Harmon was once named the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by People Magazine.

Harmon, of course, is best known as Leroy Jethro Gibbs — the character he portrays on the popular military crime show, NCIS. That said, he has also made appearances in a number of other roles since the early 1970s. Harmon’s NCIS character appeared in a guest-starring role on JAG. And one of his other best-known roles came as Secret Service special agent Simon Donovan in The West Wing for which he received a 2002 Emmy Award nomination.

But it was actually his role on St. Elsewhere that led to him being named the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ back in 1986. Harmon sat down with Joan Rivers on The Late Night Show with Joan Rivers back in 1986 to discuss that and his subsequent dating life.

Rivers opens up the interview by asking Harmon how he plans to follow up being named America’s sexiest man.

“You are doing very well,” she says.

“Well, I’m okay, Joan. I’m just getting started,” Harmon replied.

“The sexiest man in America, how do you follow that?”

“I think they’re pretty hard up for sexy men,” Harmon says with a laugh.

Dating Life for ‘NCIS’ Star Mark Harmon

You would have to imagine that being a star actor would be enough for Mark Harmon to land a date. And after he was named America’s Sexiest Man, that would just be the cherry on top. But the NCIS star told Joan Rivers back in 1986 that he even struggled to find love at times.

“Oh, come on. You never had any trouble going out or getting dates or anything?” Rivers asked.

“Oh, sure I did. I’m having trouble right now as we speak,” Harmon admitted.

“I don’t get it,” she says.

That made two of them.

“I don’t get it either,” Harmon laughed.

“I don’t believe that women don’t stop you on the street and go, ‘Hi, I saw you in ‘People Magazine’ and here is my card.'”

However, Harmon replied saying that had actually happened to him.

“The other day I was in my car and I was locking up. All of the sudden, this red Ferrari pulled up next to me and the lady said ‘Hey, can I borrow a pen?'” Harmon recalled. “So, I took out a pen and handed it to her. I locked my car and set the alarm. Then I turned around and she handed me back the pen with her phone number and took off.”

But the longtime NCIS star says he never called.

“I just saw her legs. It’s hard to just get attracted to legs,” he said. “She drives a nice car, though.”
