NCIS star Sean Murray, who plays Special Agent Timothy McGee, had a ton of kind words for Special Agent Gibbs actor Mark Harmon in an interview that took place earlier this year. Murray and Harmon are amongst the few remaining cast members from the early years of NCIS. Now, the series is almost 20 years old with a ton of new cast members at the helm.

Murray and Harmon have bonded during their time on the show, and after so many years, they’ve become incredibly close. In an interview in February with Inquirer.net, Murray explained their friendship.

“The relationship between McGee and Gibbs has always been like that of a father-son thing, but we’ll be exploring that quite a bit and see how that’s changed and grown,” he explained of the upcoming episodes. But for him, the bond doesn’t stop when the cameras aren’t rolling.

“As for Mark, he’s a mentor and one of my best friends,” Murray said. “One of the best work partners I’ve ever had. He means a tremendous amount to me. He’s got these qualities of a leader that have made the show what it is today. He’s our quarterback.”

Unfortunately, though, all things must come to an end, and it looks like Mark Harmon’s time on NCIS may come to an abrupt halt.

Mark Harmon Was Allegedly Eyeing an Exit from ‘NCIS’

Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter released an article claiming that Mark Harmon was eyeing an exit from NCIS, but CBS higher-ups told the actor and executive producer that if they left, they’d have no choice but to cancel the series. This made Mark Harmon stay on for another year in an attempt to save the show.

If Mark Harmon truly is the “leader” that “makes the show what it is today” it makes sense why CBS feels like they’d need him to guarantee the show’s success. NCIS is the highest-rated scripted drama in the world. It has produced three spinoff series thus far, bringing in a ton of business for CBS. Harmon has been at the helm of the show not only as a lead actor but an executive producer.

Mark Harmon has also been instrumental in the creation of spinoff series NCIS: New Orleans, which lasted for seven seasons before getting canceled by the network earlier this year.

But Harmon is still on the show. And with plenty planned for this year, season 19 of NCIS won’t be one fans want to miss. NCIS comes out on Monday, September 20th on CBS. Right after NCIS season 19 airs, you can catch the brand new NCIS: Hawai’i. It stars Vanessa Lachey and takes place on the beautiful islands, following Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant as she leads her own NCIS team.
