“NCIS” star Wilmer Valderrama knows a thing or two about working closely with writers from his days as Fez on “That ’70s Show.”

Valderrama, who plays Special Agent Nicholas Torres, said in an interview with ET Canada’s Sangita Patel that this is done to keep the show current.

“I think it’s so fascinating how the writers try to keep it so fresh,” he said of the “NCIS” episodes. “They have a real partnership with us on the show so a lot of them really consult with the actors.

“‘Where do you think your character will go next? How does the character feel about this something?'” Valderrama said of the writers’ questions. “You know we’ve done a lot of work on our characters so it makes it fun for us to continue to be involved and, so for us, invested to perform those scenes.”

‘NCIS’ Star’s Character Will Be Facing Some Things After Bishop Left

Valderrama has played Torres since appearing on “NCIS” in the CBS crime drama’s 14th season. He will return this fall with the other stars of the show, including Mark Harmon, who plays Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Besides Harmon, David McCallum is set to come back as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard and Sean Murray as Detective Timothy McGee. Veteran actor Gary Cole will join the cast next season as Alden Park.

As last season closed, Torres and Ellie Bishop shared a kiss. But the hitch was that Bishop, played by Emily Wickersham, was headed out on assignment. Actually, Wickersham left “NCIS” as one of the show’s main characters.

So Torres, who came on board to fill the spot left when longtime cast member Michael Weatherly left, is going to go through some things next season. But “NCIS” is a show which has been going through cast changes throughout its lengthy run on CBS.

Longtime cast member Pauley Perrette, who played fan-favorite Abby, left after the 15th season. Weatherly left after the 13th season. Cote de Pablo was a regular between the third and 11th seasons. She also was a guest star in the third and 16th seasons. De Pablo came back as a recurring character for the 17th season but left the show for good. Maria Bello was on “NCIS” between the 15th and 18th seasons.

One actress who did appear last season for a four-episode arc was Harmon’s real-life wife, actress Pam Dawber. She played an investigative journalist looking into Gibbs, who just lost his job for beating up a dog killer.

Now there was no romance happening between Harmon and Dawber in their characters. But could she return again this coming season? Well, nothing is etched on stone about it so anything is possible when it comes to “NCIS.”
