NCIS fans have been watching long enough to know a clue when they see one. A handful of fans are certain they know when Gibbs will return.

Leave it up to amateur sleuths and investigators to get the answers on something this important. Mark Harmon portrayed Gibbs for 18 years. The team leader of NCIS and a father figure to many of the other characters on the show.

However, Leroy Gibbs said goodbye and headed up to Alaska to take time to himself. While Harmon has been and still is part of the production team, he isn’t likely going to appear on screen much more. Despite that, fans think they have a clue for when he will return.

It all comes down to the intro sequence. In it, Gibbs is still featured. He hasn’t been taken out of that opening scene so why would he not come back?

Here’s how one fan put it. “Gibbs is still in the opening credits…which means I don’t believe he has left the series completely… he’ll come back at some point.”

Another fan is not convinced either. They cited the fact that Gibbs has left NCIS before and always made a comeback. “Mark Harmon will come back for an ep sometime this season I bet. He’s still in the opening credits and does the ‘Stay tuned…’. Also, he’s left and come back multiple times.”

Showrunner Says to ‘Never Count Leroy Jethro Gibbs Out.’

Now, an opening sequence could mean anything. Perhaps they just didn’t want to mess with doing another one this season. Since Gibbs appeared in the first part of the season, they might have just left him in to signify he had been in the season.

So, if that little bit of information isn’t enough for you, maybe this will be. The NCIS showrunner, Steve Binder talked about the departure and Harmon’s role on the show. It sounds like it could mean a comeback is in store for the future.

“As an executive producer and dear friend,” Binder started. “Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show. Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.”

He went on to say, “So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of [NCIS] may have noticed over the years… never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”

‘NCIS’ Fans Have Adjusted to New Team Leader Parker

One thing that fans have started to get used to, new NCIS team leader Alden Parker. Gary Cole portrays the agent and has tried to get comfortable in his new place.

While fans love Gibbs and want him back more than anything, they should get used to Parker. Many have, but there are still holdouts. Perhaps as the season goes on, and the character develops, those folks will come around. Cole is a great actor and should be able to own the role.
